Iowa State Indoor Track Classic

I get your point but to be fair, this has always been a huge meet going back to the very first one in the early 1990's. That day, Frankie Atwater nearly beat Danny Harris in the 600 and the place was packed and loud. I would say it was originally Bergan's baby.

This was back in the day when it was Arkansas and Iowa State that were among two of the best in the land at all three running sports. Oregon was average and Wisconsin was awfully good as well.

So, what schools are here? I've been seeing tons of coach buses driving around Ames and wondered what was going on. Last night, I saw buses for Iowa and Wisconsin. Who else is here?

Most Big Ten and Big 12 schools plus entrants from LSU, Florida, Ariz St., Auburn, Mizzou, Kentucky, Stanford, BYU, lots of smaller schools too. Elite performers in almost all events.
There is another "competing" collegiate indoor meet this same weekend - the Tyson Invitational at Arkansas, but wow, there are lots of big-time athletes in Ames right now.

Wow. That is impressive. Glad we have nice weather for them. Hope some get to come over to experience Hilton Magic . . . and then have the best ones transfer here.

before snarky internet posters existed, i always thought these sort of events were really cool for ames/iowa state/ central iowa as a kid. Wasn't Lied one of the largest indoor tracks in the US when it was built?

Still is. Which has proven to be a catch 22 because athletes love to run on it but NCAA won't allow national championship meets on anything but 200m banked tracks.

I think when it was built it might have been the only one - I know that there are now similar sized ones at Kentucky, Notre Dame, Kent State, Washington, Northern Ariz, BYU, and one in Boone, NC. In talking with coaches I know that ours is still one of the fastest, and they say we do a great job of hosting events like this.
Well, we do have an AD who is a track/field fan!

When it was built- Bill was proud of the distinction that it had, it was the largest indoor track in North America. Soon after, Bill and ISU built the nation's second on campus cross country course. (XC was mostly run on golf courses prior to 1994)
