Austin Gomez seeks release from ISU + other recruits' status

It's early. We shouldn't be surprised if more recruits back out. It's the nature of situations like this.

Hopefully we can get the new coach announced soon and see who he can hold onto.

Does requesting a release do anything for the recruit or other schools as far as allowing conversations to take place? If so then I can see the reasoning, or if in Allar's case, you weren't sticking it out anyway, but if not, what's the benefit to immediately requesting the release vs. waiting to see who the new coach will be?

I would guess emotions are part of it.

I think college coaches have to get permission from Iowa State AD to talk with anybody signed, but not sure.

Schools do not have to grant the request and can also put restrictions but generally do not. I doubt anyone will be released until the new coach is hired.

One thought I had was maybe Allar would not have been given a release if there were no changes in the coaching staff. Maybe this changes his chances of getting a release. The fact is any incoming freshman could make a change without being released and it be similar to a redshirt year. If someone isn't released can they still compete unattached in open tourney's the next year?

I think u need release to talk to schools whenever under a NLI. The release from the program is the next step.

And Cyler. which might of cost us a title then. Probably needed Gallick healthy also though

The wrestlers can call whoever they want. It is the school that is not able to contact the wrestler until they are released.

Unless I'm wrong (and I might be, I'm just remembering the VT/Brands situation) they can join a team and wrestle unattached. I don't think they can get scholarship money but I might be wrong on that.

I don't remember that about the VT situation. I do remember that all of the transfers had already used their redshirts so they lost a full year of eligibility due to transferring without a release. Allar and the other incoming freshmen could use their redshirt year if needed. That said, I don't see ISU not giving those HS guys a release after the new coach has had a chance to talk to them. The current roster guys like Storr, Vega or Downey could be handled differently if they wanted to leave.

I feel like I remember that the VT transfers couldn't receive money that first year as well.
