ESPN - Bartman turns down $25,000 offer to sign photo of infamous play - MLB

I'm a big Cubs fan and never have used him as the scapegoat for that game. Alex Gonzalez is that guy for botching a routine grounder the very next play but you have to respect that Bartman is not cashing in on his infamous incident. I would think for the right price some people wouldn't care about their dignity and cash in on all they could for an embarrasing moment.

I hope somebody offers him a few million for a book offer someday - about how this has affected his life.

That poor guy deserves some sort of compensation with all the crap he's had to endure. I was watching something the other night (HBO Bob Costas, I think) and they had a shot of that play and then him sitting there. Not sure why. There have been far more eggregious acts of fan interference/activity.

But you're right - good for him and not just cashing in.

You mean, for instance, a certain 1996 AL playoff game between the Orioles and Yankees at Yankee Stadium where a teenager reaches over the outfield wall, snagging the ball from an Oriole outfielder who would have clearly caught it if not interfered with, the umps rule it a home run, and the kid is dubbed as the savior of the Yankees that season?

Thats pretty cool of him...although I would turn down the 25 g's and ask for much more! Ruined the guys life pretty much and everyone has their price so maybe he is just wanting more $$$$$

Ruined the guy's ability to go to a Cubs game ever again? Yes. Ruined the guy's life? Me thinks not. ESPN the Mag did an interview with the guy a couple of years back. The guy lives in a wealthyish Chicago suburb and virtually no one there knows what he's famous for, even was well-liked at work and in the community. Seems like the signs of a ruined life to me :skeptical:

Yeah, if he's sitting in the front row, he's probably not lacking cash. I understand him being a scapegoat, but it was the Cubs who gave up 8 runs and choked not Bartman.

I think any rational Cubs fan knows that Bartman made no difference on the outcome of that game and the Cubs just blew it. Alou is the guy who needs to let it go. He has talked about that moment more than anyone in the past 12 months

I thought Alou recently came out and said he didn't think he could have made the catch even if Bartman hadn't touched the ball. I recall that being mentioned in a Cubs thread on this board. Anybody else recall that?

If Bartman was a hot chick, he/she would have already been published in Playboy for 10 times that amount.

Yeah, but after about a week of the national media ripping into him for coming out with that five years after the fact (and them then saying that it was his meltdown in the first place that was what turned Bartman into the scapegoat that he is today) he recanted his statement. He once again publicly blames Bartman for costing the Cubs a chance at the World Series.

If I remember correctly, at one point he said that he would have caught it, then said he wouldn't have. But the kicker is that a few months after he said he wouldn't have, he comes out and says he would have, again.

I’m a huge Cubs fan but I’ve felt nothing but bad for Steve Bartman. To go for a foul ball is instinct and despite having seen the replay dozens of times I still only think there’s a 50/50 chance Alou catches it. Bartman’s a class act. I think if the Cubs ever win the World Series he should be the Grand Marshall in the parade.

I would have signed the photo, it was for a charity auction I believe. Besides he did nothing that a reasonable person in the same situation wouldn't have done. And there were 2 or 3 other fans battling for the ball as well. The booted grounder is what killed the Cubs anyway.

I'm pretty sure Bill Buckner came back to Boston to throw out the first pitch in one of their games this season. I can't believe that guy would ever step foot in that town again. What a bunch of dicks :wideeyed:

A normal life? I don't call the Governor of your state suggesting you join the witness protection program a normal life.

Yeah, you wanna provide proof on that one?

You wanna provide proof it didn't happen? What a joke.

Maybe the guy's life wasn't RUINED, but he had to move away from his home for a few years, be ridiculed all over the damn place, and will NEVER, EVER be forgotten for the incident. Moses Alou deserves all the blame, this kid did what anyone would do.

The tone of the article I read in ESPN the Mag was not a tone of someone who's life had been ruined. It was more the tone of someone who had moved on with his life - unlike a LOT of other Cubs fans...

I think it is great he has moved on with his life, but it will never be the same.
