Burtons jumping ability???

Not questioning his skill or athletic ability or anything like that, but has anyone noticed that he seems to lack the leaping ability he showed while at Marquette? Has he put on enough muscle/weight he has lost some of that? Just something ive noticed.

On another note, I listened to the game on ESPN radio while driving, and the announcers called him "Deon Burton" during the 1st half, then switched to "Deonte Burnett" for most of the 2nd half. They finally started getting it right in overtime. It baffles me that these guys get paid to do a job and can't bother to learn the names of at least the starters.
So many games, so little broadcasting talent.

On one of our games earlier in the year I remember an announcer called Burton another guy who couldn't jump over a can of tuna. I was thinking this guy must have never seen Burton play. He has phenominal hops. While it occasionally showcases on offense, it really comes out when he is on weak side D and can come across for the block.

I kind of understand what the OP is saying. Sure, he can dunk just fine, you just don't see him do it much unless he's pretty wide open.

You haven't seen him do much of this at ISU......

Burton has jumping ability, yes, but there is a distinct difference between someone like Burton who can explode up for a dunk and someone like McKay who jumps quickly like he has springs in his shoes. And yes, height and weight play a large part into this. I've read this many times already and will repeat, Burton is an oversized guard and should be utilized in such a way. He should be playing the 3 position, not the 4 or 5.

Burton can really be an enigma. So much of the time he seems content to catch the ball flat-footed outside the 3-pt line. He's so much more dangerous when he catches it in motion from a cut or with the defender on his hip so he can use his athletic advantage. But he seems to always want to try to break down his defender off the dribble.

I guess I'd rather have him miss dunks over someone than miss layups fading away from the basket. He's MUCH more likely to get a foul called on the defender if he tries to dunk over them than if he fades away and just flips the ball up at the rim hoping it goes in.

Sad!

Didn't seem to have any trouble bringing the thunder at the end of the OU game - wish I had the clip but the kid from OU actually had to turn his head away to protect himself.

His leaping ability has never been elite it's his wingspan that is elite.

He can jump. He's jumped the tip this year over Bowie and last year over Niang and Nader.

I've noticed this. I've also noticed that Matt walks with his toes pointed inward a little more this year and I'm wondering if that has made him make less shots.

On his shot blocks he looks like he's jumping out of the gym

When someone is heading toward the basket and he's on the weak side and paying attention, there's a better chance Burton sends it through our hoop than the other guy gets it in his.

Which Burton are you watching Burton can dunk with the best of them, his problem is not jumping ability it is the distrust of teammates which make him try to do it all by himself..

I had a basketball coach tell me that you cannot win this game by yourself because its a team game......

Great clip! But it sure looks like Deonte took 3 steps on his way to the basket.........
