Basketball Program Rankings

I wonder how long it will be before the complaints about Iowa being at 49 start and how they are a much worse program than us ;)

I was thinking the same thing. I was trying to figure out where they got the points over us but I think the biggest is probably the losing seasons even though we have more conference titles and tourney titles plus deeper runs in the NCAA tourney than them in recent history. We both lost to lower seeds in the 1st round so that was a wash.
 
Thats a great honor for our BBall program. I had no idea outsiders looked upon our basketball that highly! I was guessing that we would have been around 70.

By these definitions, basketball teams are somewhat weighted by consistency within their conference and winning records regardless of schedules. I think that's why you see a lot of mid-majors ranked higher than some would think... I think mid-majors are much better now, but in 1985, they were really a step below the larger conferences. No way when comparing teams is all that perfect, but overall I think it's a fair assesment. It seems like when we're good, we were really good, but when we were bad, we were horrible. We don't have enough consistency in our conference. Need to avoid the "disaster" season. Ideally I'd like to see a "good" season have us finish in the top 4 in the conference, and a "bad" season have us finish 6 to 8th.
 
We've had some great seasons, but we've had some pretty bad ones as well. For something like this it seems better to be consistently average than our roller coaster program.

We're probably also the team with the most NCAA tournament wins to not appear in the Top 50. The problem with their rankings is the criteria they used. Nowhere do they take into account the team's strength of schedule or strength of conference. That makes it much easier for the College of Charleston to get 5 points for winning its conference and avoid getting -3 points for having a losing season. On top of that, the Big 8/Big 12 has four of the nation's toughest arenas to play in (Lawrence, Stillwater, Columbia and Ames), and ISU played a heck of a lot of games in those arenas. How many other teams have won 3 games in Lawrence over the last 10 years? None.
