The school with the most NCAA tournament appearances to not appear in the Top 50 is Iowa State (T-57). The Cyclones' 12 NCAA tournament appearances were canceled out by weak showings in conference play. Only twice did they earn the best win-loss record in their conference.
We're probably also the team with the most NCAA tournament wins to not appear in the Top 50. The problem with their rankings is the criteria they used. Nowhere do they take into account the team's strength of schedule or strength of conference. That makes it much easier for the College of Charleston to get 5 points for winning its conference and avoid getting -3 points for having a losing season. On top of that, the Big 8/Big 12 has four of the nation's toughest arenas to play in (Lawrence, Stillwater, Columbia and Ames), and ISU played a heck of a lot of games in those arenas. How many other teams have won 3 games in Lawrence over the last 10 years? None.
