Going for Two

I think this game shows why it's generally not a good idea to go for two so early. Those extra two points would of sealed the game after the last fg. As it was KU had a chance to tie or even win with a two point conversion of their own.

Had a little debate with my friends on this as well. My philosophy has always been to go for 1 until you know you absolutely need the two with what's left in the game. At the end of the third quarter, there is just way too many possibilities that can play out to say we had to go for two.

I tend to agree. Kick extra points until the 4th quarter. Too many point differential combinations based on 2,3,6 points.

But I agreed with ISU going for the first 2 pt conversion. There was just 3-4 seconds left in the 3rd quarter and if ISU made the 2 pt conversion it ties the game. Odds against it, but if that TD had been the last score, as head coach I would kick myself if I kicked the XP and lost by 1pt.

The second 2pt conversion I couldn't figure out. I would rather be up by 5 and a later FG would make it 8, forcing aTD and 2 pt conversion.

If you wait to try the 2-point conversion at the last second, you have zero chances to make those points up if you fail. If you go for two the next time you score (say the 3rd quarter) - and don't get it, then you now have a quarter and a half to make up for the mistake.

In short, I agree with Campbell on going for it the next time around but not the second time he tried. At that point just get the point. There is never a guarantee that either team will score again either. Imagine how mad we would all be if Campbell didn't go for it in the third quarter and then the game ended 24-23 when we had the chance to tie it and didn't.

The first one was the right call. The second one was dumb.

Nope. You don't go for 2 until the 4th quarter when you absolutely need it. Today showed exacly why that is. We lost 3 points instead of 1. Especially when it appeared both teams would continue to score.

I agree with this. If you wait unitl last second to try and get the two and miss it you have no time to make up the points. If you try the two earlier and miss, well, then you know you have to make up the points.

Iowa going for two was hilarious. KF FOR LIFE!

Hilarious? I thought it was a great call and if the receiver didn't have stone hands would of tied the game. Did you also think it was hilarious when they went for it on 4th down?

Going for two in the second quarter is completely stupid. You don't get credit for being tied at halftime. I'll laugh when that catches up to Iowa late in the game, because it usually does (just like it nearly did to ISU today)

Bottom line- you don't beat top five teams by playing conservative. I like the aggressiveness.

To me, going for 2 before you are well into the 4th quarter is indirectly telling your team I'm not sure we will score again or do very little scoring after that. We spent the whole game chasing that 1 extra point and failing and after each score instead of coming away with momentum we walked away with blunted momentum and giving KU a little momentum. I think if you have a great offense like TTU then maybe you go for it all the time.

There is a difference between being aggressive and leaving points on the field before the final minted of a game.
