Cedar Rapids flooding

Initial projections had levels going up to 26' (and some estimates as high as 28' could be found). I'd rather be over prepared than under.
Plus, the amount of money and time that's been put into the Newbo and Czech areas is tremendous, not to mention downtown. Protecting those is vital to growth and development of the city.
This absolutely false. The higest crest prediction was around 25.3.

Highest per national weather service was 25.3. There were other places that reported 26+. I never saw the models though.
I only go to the website that I trust and the National Weather service site. Some of the ignorant posts in this thread really pisses me off. I live in the Time Check area and this city and everyone that lives here have worked their as*** off to keep this city safe. I bet most of those questioning if we overprepared, do you realize that the grass berm/levee is only good for 22.5 ft of water. Do the math and tell me how much water it's going to put my side of town under water.

How in the **** has this event been over-hyped? How can the second-highest crest in history even BE over-hyped? The river is going to crest within a foot of initial projections. That's not over-hype, that's damn good forecasting and damn good preparedness on the part of the city.

That's exactly the point I am trying to make in regard to mtown's odd posts in this thread.

Im sitting out in Palo right now waiting for the river to crest here. Expecting the river to crest here in the next hour. Looks like my property will survive and not take on any flood damage.
That said I had 30-40 people move out so my business will feel a substantial economic impact.

Surprisingly Blairs Ferry Road is still open, with no plans to close assuming the river crests soon as expected.

They may only rate the levee for 22.5 feet of water, but I can tell you that you have a solid 2+ feet right now before it hits the top of the berm, and it doesn't appear it will get there. Add in the additional barrier they put in and you should be ok. I spent all day today patrolling the levee and storm sewers in the Time Check area and it looks like you will be in good shape.

As for over prepared, it still took many full work crews and dozens of volunteers all day today to keep the impact away from houses and buildings. Those same crews and volunteers will be there for the next 24 hours give or take, and it's still possible that there is a significant event somewhere. CR handled and prepared for this perfectly, in my opinion.

Inundation maps are a piece of cake. Predicting the flood levels is the hard part.

I am guessi

Good point to bring up. "Freeboard" above the rated protection elevation is your friend.

KCRG reported that Blairs Ferry east of Palo was closed as of yesterday afternoon. Are you sure it's still open?

21.9' feet now. Just inches from crest. Praying that all of the levees and barriers continue to hold as the water recedes.

The crazy thing is it will not fall below 20 feet until Thursday.
That is what's scary. The walls, levees, and barriers have held up for the most part but they still need to hold for another 3 days...
