“Coach (Kirk) Ferentz sits us down and said, ‘This is Iowa State, and they don’t like us,’” Iowa senior linebacker Quinton Alston said. “This is our rivalry game — the Cy-Hawk Game — and it’s a big game for the city and the state. So there’s not much to talk about.”
Iowa has played five Big Ten schools at least 74 times, yet its in-state series against Iowa State has surpassed the others in trash talking and intensity, Alston said.
“I just hate Iowa State,” Iowa linebacker Fred Barr said. “I hate those guys. I can’t stand them."

Ferentz hardly displays a public “rah-rah” persona before any game. His levelheaded approach upsets some Iowa fans, who accused him after losses of not placing enough importance on the series.
But Ferentz’s public comments and actions belie that perception. The program has placed Iowa State posters on doors in its football facility. An examination of his pregame comments over the last decade shows his respect for Iowa State and the series.
Unless I am missing it, I dont see where anybody says the #1 goal of the Iowa program is to beat ISU.
Of course they want to win an instate rivalry game.
Ok, by average, Iowa is 51 and ISU is 60, HUGE difference. Not ISU's fault Iowa has a problem with player retention.
I could look to see what Frank Lauterbur thinks about the game since he was 4 coaches ago just like McCarney was.
Actually using basic logic Iowa State would be the program with retention issues.
Coaching changes that happens, I don't follow Iowa football so no idea why they only have 70 players, that was just an assumption. Is KF Franning players?
This argument is stupid and pointless and repeated every year. Iowa State fans want to be respected and relevant, Iowa fans want the ISU game to not matter and go away. wash, rinse, repeat.
i keep saying i think iowa is a better program. i'll say it again: i think iowa is a better program than iowa state. i don't think i've seen an iowa state fan claim that iowa state is an elite program a single time in this thread.
however i DO think iowa state is pretty damn close to iowa. i do NOT think there is some huge gap between the two programs. which is why, when we play, we've had success against you recently.
iowa is closer to iowa state than they are to alabama.
