Update on Harrison Barnes

IMO, the longer it goes (and the higher he gets on the charts), the more our chances decrease.

Unless we come out this winter and win a ton of games - which I don't expect.

Completely disagree. It's not like HB is going to garner many better offers than he already has. Really, only Duke and UNC are left and are they really that much better than KU and UK? IMO the longer that this drags out, the better chance that HB will see ISU improving and the talent of our young players.

Bottom line is that GMac HAS to get the team showing signs of improvement this coming season. Because that's all that HB will have to go on. This time next year, he is going to be looking at committing somewhere.

If I was being recruited I would want to go where I could get the most playing time and where I could put up 20+ and 10 every game. For a guy like Harrison who at this point looks like he has the skills to be an NBA draft or possibly lottery pick thats what I would be looking for.

I would guess that can happen at ISU and a lot of other schools. One thing ISU has that the others dont is HB is an instant star of the program before he plays his first game in Ames.

I'd love to be optimistic about our chances to land Barnes - but I'm not. I hope he does come here yet I'll wish him luck regardless.

The more I hear/read, the more I think we're on the outside looking in.

Respectfully disagree. The only way Coach Mac can land Harrison is if we start winning. IF he can hold out from giving a commit to another school. IF we can put together a winning season and contend for the Big 12. THEN we have a shot.

Harrison wants to play in the NBA and has said in interviews how ISU hasn't put really many guys in the NBA recently, and he wants to win.

ISU has had ONE lasting player in the NBA since Kelvin Cato and that is JT. Fizer had a brief stint as did Blalock, Vroman, etc.

Considering the battles we'll be facing this winter, it's going to be very tough for coach to win in '08/'09. Hence one of the reasons I'm not confident Barnes will end up at ISU.

I think the ONLY way we get Harrison is if he commits before the season starts. Once the season starts other schools are going to be using our struggles as another recruiting tool in their favor...

Anybody know if Harrison plans on finishing at Ames High or a 'basketball factory'. I wouldn't be suprised at all to see him at an Oak Hill or similar next year.

Why would he need to go to a basketball factory out east? He is already a top 10 prospect with offers from everyone in the county and that won't change by playing at Ames at this point.

To play against the best competition every game. To get his game ready for the NBA. Alot of those schools, especially Oak Hill, are VERY good academic schools as well.

If he is really considering this, I don't think that is a very good decision. If you have NBA talent the NBA will find you. With all the players drafter from high school or Europe, being "discovered" at any Big 12 school shouldn't be a problem. Take K-State for example, not exactly a draft pick factory, but that wasn't a problem for Beasley.

For the level of success we have had on the court, we have actually done pretty well for getting players drafted. I think the issue with them not having lasting NBA careers has been more of an issue of the players we had drafted didn't have natural position fits in the NBA.

Are you sure it is a good academic school? They have had the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Stephen Jackson, and now Brandon Jennings go through there.

There is more to the school then just the basketball team...

You sure? They only have 90 to 100 students in 8-12 grade. There are 3 basketball teams. Doesn't seem like there is to much more to the school than the team

No need to debate/argue over this. Harrison is and will finish his basketball and high school years at Ames High School.

They didn't clarify that on their website!

Uh, I doubt that there is a high school in Iowa that wouldn't rank ahead of Oak Hill "Academy." Brandon Jennings went there for two years - has failed twice to attain the minimum SAT score for NCAA eligibility (the second score was called into doubt) and took it a third time recently.
To go from Ames High - ranked as one of the TOP TWO high schools in Iowa, along with CR Kennedy - to Oak Hill Academy - would be a plunge of monumental academic proportions.
