Gov. Abbott says Houston Is #11

Um, Colorado's, Nebraska's, and Missouri's previous conference was the Big 12.

Assume he meant current. Missouri and Nebraska are not coming back. You're not leaving the stability and $ of the SEC/B10.

The Gov is also a ****

Politics and power may get Houston in. On the positive side if the Big 12 is going to 12 and honestly wanting to stay after the current GOR's, Houston and BYU probably help the ratings on T1 & T2 the most. BYU is a brand and by adding Houston and having a hometown school in the 4th largest city I think all of the Texahoma games get a bump in the state ratings wise. It wouldn't hurt if Texas and OU to a lesser extent would be dominant and win a few national titles and A&M continue to struggle, that would help cool SEC interest in Houston.

Also, now that the ACC schools are off the board give the most regional flexibility in any future adds. The goals are probably Arizona schools, Colorado with the PAC problems or a hope Missouri comes back and the pipe dream of Arkansas wanting to play regionally.

Houston adds nothing to the television footprint. Would the Big 12 take Missouri back?

I think we go after bigger fish than teams mentioned other than BYU. U need strong alumni bases, stadium fillers, and strong student numbers with TV markets. Talk to Colorado, BYU, Nebraska, and Missouri. Three of those schools mentioned that I talk with (fans/donors) hate their previous conference. Just saying what I hear, hammer away.

Forget Colorado and Nebraska. Both have signed a grant of rights contract.

So I understand that Texas is a big fish in conference, but it seems BS that the Texas governor feels that he can dictate which teams should be added. What if the OU governor felt that expansion cannot happen without Tulsa? Does the Big12 have to cave to his demands as well?

Who the **** cares if Houston is in Texas. They are one of the better teams we can grab, and they are still on the rise. They can boom in the Big12 just like Baylor did. They aren't going to water down the money.

Take a look at TCU now and look at them 5 years ago. There is a much different perception of them due to one fact and one fact only: They are in the Big 12. So judging Houston on the fact that they are in the AAC now is very short-sighted. If you think Houston vs. UT, TCU, Baylor, OU, OSU, TTU are not going to be big ratings games, then you are fooling yourself. Networks are probably salivating at the chance to get Houston in this conference. They move the needle more than any team in the discussion outside of the possibility of pulling in a P5 team.

I am sure the Big 12 would listen if that is what Oklahoma wanted. But Oklahoma does not want that.

Texas could be doing this so Houston doesn't fight the expansion of UT-Houston onto the land they purchased. And Texas could also be doing this to get another vote in their pocket.

Another thought is that the Pac 12 could possibly take Houston as a member. Don't see that happening at all. But Houston is out there and is openly courting other conferences. With Texas pushing for Houston, that pushes them up into the top 4 at least.

At this point, I really think that Cinci is in, because of location. Next add BYU, because of a big football stadium and also not having to buyout of a conference. Then probably Houston, because Texas wants them. 4th school could be UConn. BYU and Houston additions alleviate the weakness of UConn football. And UConn really does add to the Basketball resume. The trick is how to divide them into divisions.

Wonder what Boren thinks of this...

The Governor's tweet is him just doing what's best for his state's universities. However, the politics in Texas for this kind of stuff is just stupid. The governor essentially has two votes on the issue and may tell UT and tech to vote a certain way, despite what the president's think and is best for the conference. If the Governordoes force tem to vote in a waythat the universities do not, I hope theygive off those signals to all other membersso they can vote against it.

I know we're currently on the inside looking at the relative strength of the options. And I do think UCONN is definitely top 4.

But to call them weak is a bit of a stretch. They have been in a Major Bowl (Fiesta). And ISU never has, so maybe they aren't THAT weak.

I care. Because until the cable cord is completely cut, TV sets matter, and Houston adds precisely **** in terms of new TV sets to this conference (100% of Houston's TV sets are already covered by UT and the other 3 schools).

As I said, I'd be more than happy to add Houston if we dump Baylor first. But this conference doesn't need a fifth Texas school.

The non-TexAss schools should demand the following to allow in the commuter school of Houston:( ISU/KU/KSU/WVU/OU/OSU)
1. Demand UT turn LHN to B12/B14/B16 Network
2. Require all teams to sign ironclad GOR for 20 years like ACC
3. Make Houston change mascot as BYU already has Cougars - too confusing
4. Add 6 schools - Get CU back and add BYU/CU/CSU/Houston/Memphis/Cincy
5. Never add UConn - all conferences have avoided them like the plague - they are ESPN darlings only due to proximity to Bristol CT. Let B1G choke on them.
6. If not then grow a pair and go after CU/AZ/ASU to break up Pac 12 - screw it and stop being a patsy!

I doubt number 3 is much of an issue, the SEC has 3 different teams with a tiger for a mascot.

Okay - I'll give you number 3 as it just a pet peeve of mine. Others are valid as the arm twisting has begun. Leath/Pollard have to be in the game and get some recognition for the non TX schools along with their brethren. No more BS like last fiasco - either go big or go smart - no more tentative wishy washy crap. Still think 6 teams make sense - force other confs to look at their membership. Does anyone really believe that without cable ties that people watch Rutgers/Purdue/Illinois/Indiana/Maryland FB? That those teams are any better than the B12 members? Can we throw out Vandy? WF? NCST? NC?Duke?KY? - hell no! So adding up and comers makes sense - bring in new fans who aren't jaded like those moribund B1G or ACC/SEC also rans. I would travel to Cincy/Memphis - even Fort Collins for games. Provo/Houston a little far but would watch! Time to be proactive for the good of all.

Rick Neuheisel says UCLA should look into joining the Big XII, but seems doubtful about it, especially without USC. I know it won't happen, but it seems to me that would be worth the money it would take to cover the GOR, if you wanted to ensure long term survival of the Big XII.
