Refrigerator suggestions, please

I can hardly believe I'm going to a thread on a sports board asking mostly guys about this, but I swallow my female pride and do it anyway.

The freezer portion of our Samsung refrigerator has died and it's just a short matter of time before the fridge part goes, too. The repairman said that for the most part, Samsungs aren't good -- the company tried to do things that didn't work, and made it virtually impossible to find help online or replacement parts. I guess we were luckier than most with ours lasting 7 or so years. I couldn't even find a manual for our model online. Sigh. Repair guy also said Whirlpool is best brand, Electrolux is also good, as is SubZero but I don't have $10,000 for that!

However, with the impending demise of this major kitchen appliance and my limited luck finding much good in online reviews, I'd like to know if anyone's recently purchased a refrigerator with French doors, ice and water in the door and bottom freezer. I don't really want a full drawer in the fridge part (have to open both doors that way), but I'm open to various arrangements of shelves, etc.

What did you buy? How long ago? What do you like, not like, absolutely hate? And if know your SO's thoughts, feel free to include them, too.

I'm in Ames and not really looking forward to losing more food when my fridge decides it's done. Had enough of that with the freezer. TIA.

I had my Samsung fridge(about 8 years old then) quit about 2 years ago. I ended up replacing the control board and it fixed it. My freezer wouldn't freeze anymore, but the fridge portion stayed cold enough. I can't remember what I was checking to determine that the control board was the problem. It might have been that everything else was verified as working properly.

Found the control board online for around $100. A lot cheaper than a new fridge.

I guess I'm the first to say that we have an LG French door model that is 4 years old (is humming along like a champ).
Water and ice in the door. Love the LED lighting on the inside. I buy generic filters for it, and haven't had any problems with that yet either.

I'd never think about spending $5k on a fridge but that new Samsung with the 21" screen on the front is pretty amazing. People will probably start getting 5 year loans on them.

Not sure about the fridge, but we just bought a new washer/dryer during our move. Thought about Samsung, then got the hell away after finding all the reports of the washers exploding on Amazon, big box reviews sections, smaller review sites, all over basically...

NFM salesperson also said while they sell Samsung appliances and they're somewhat nice when working, it's next to impossible to find anyone who can/will service them in Iowa right now.

I am completely opposite, I think it's ridiculous. The internal camera feature will get used about 5 times by most people and I can think of half a dozen places I'd rather stick a touchscreen than my refrigerator. I do give Samsung credit though for getting people to buy things based on criteria outside the primary use of the device.

Anything in the $800 - $1400 range will last 5-7 years. Buy one with the looks and features you want and be ready to do it again in 6 years.

You serious, Clark??

I guess I'm the luckiest refrigerator user in history then. In the ~12 or so places I've lived in my life, I think the base model that came with the house/apartment has only had to be replaced in one instance.

So is that thing supposed to stop adolescent male from standing there with the door open staring for five minutes while whining whether there is anything to eat? Some days that seems like our primary method of air conditioning. After you go through the contents a couple of times by memory he will then say, "hey we have (insert second item on your list), I'll just eat that."

Buy one of those vending machines that rotate through and you slide the little door open after you pay. You can give the kid $5 and charge 25 cents for healthy food and $3 to get a Twinkie. Get better food intake. If friends come over, you might make money.

Both the repair guy and I tried doing the electronic display "pressing" to show error code and neither of us found an issue. He said the refrigerant system is completely sealed, making it difficult to figure out where the leak is, but because of how it's constructed, a) eventually the fridge portion will also fail and b) without access to parts [Samsung apparently doesn't even try to make them very available] it's really hit or miss if we'd ever get the parts we think we need.

That is exactly what we found and why I will avoid them at all costs in the future. Not a very good business model.

I may be alone in this but I hate the stainless steel stuff. The only appliance I have with it is the microwave and I see every fingerprint. My brother has a stainless fridge, and the little kids and dogs are always pressing something or other up against it and you see every snout print.

This is soon to be my future...

Yikes, is this your experience or are you pessimistic?

I'm on year 11 with all of my appliances, dryer has needed 2 new heating elements and I think my dishwasher is one it's last leg, but my fridge has been bomber.

My Kenmore washer and dryer are 30 years old. Kitchen Aid appliances in the kitchen are 12 years old.

My other appliances are just pups compared to my Toastmaster toaster which is 67 years old. It was a wedding present to my parents and went off to ISU with me. Looks art deco cool and still toasts great.

At the risk of committing thread necrophilia, I'm bumping this thread.

My 6 year old ~$2.5K Whirlpool French Door Fridge just died on me. Or is going to require $1K in repairs. That's after $400 in repairs a 14 months ago for the ice maker.

So . . . what say the group? The repairman said that all fridges in the consumer price range are garbage. Or at least won't last much more than 6 or 8 years.

I'm kinda hoping for the Speed Queen of Fridges. Something moderately priced, without wifi , bluetooth, and Alexa that will last. I'm okay with paying a little more if it will last longer than 6 - 8 years out of it..

I had my old fridge die a couple summers ago.....ended up getting a kenmore from Sears, with bottom freezer, ice maker, and side by side doors in bisque. LED lights are nice, and the bottom freezer works better for me. I expect 5-10 years out of it....like it so far.
