We are finally to the point of selling my wife's car. It's an older crv with 250,000 miles on it.

Here's the kicker: it grinds when you dive it, the rear end is smashed in a little from a fender bender last year, and the sway bars are in rough shape.

I doubt many people would be interested on Craigslist, so would a dealer or a site like carmax be our best bet? Sell it for scrap? Accidental fire and claim insurance (not really for you moral do gooders).

Paint it black and gold and sell it to some dumb Hawk fan. I bet someone with Hawkeyes on his belly would pay a good price.

It doesn't owe you anything.... I would hate to sell someone else my problems. Give it away or sell it for scrap or parts.

Scrap is not worth a hoot right now, sounds like a good car to get rid of at one of those guaranteed price trade things some dealers run. Park it somewhere with a sign and a price and a big sign that says as is.

Carmax (or similar places) won't want it. They want cars under 100k miles. I tried to sell my 150k '08 Altima and they low balled offered me $2000. Said if I took the offer, they would simply park it out back and just wait to take it to auction. Sold it for $4500 on Craigslist instead.

You could try parting it out yourself. We did that with our RX8 (was wrecked) we actually made more money than book, but lots of grease monkeys out there for that car.

Donate it. Check out locals orgs to give it to. 20 years ago I drove my junky Accord over and gave it the Courage Center here in Mpls. You can find a local org or national one with local links like Kars4Kids (not sure if they are a good charity or not....just hear their commercials all the time on the radio.

Just sell it on Craigslist and see who bites or just donate it. Scrapping it is not worth it right now.

I agree with this plan. I sold two high mileage Hondas on Craigslist for 3 times what the dealer offered. I went overboard explaining the issues each had to prospective buyers. People who call on high mileage cars generally understand they are accepting risk but I didn't want lack of disclosure to come back to me later.

If you live in Eastern Iowa, Kirkwood CC has an automotive program. They take donated cars

Scrap is really low right now. I would suggest Craigslist. The fact that let is a Toyota really helps you. I buy and flip cars on the side, so if you are in Eastern iowa I might look at it.

You'd be surprised at who might want it. Some people are big on the "winter beater" and this fits most of those categories. Even though winter is over, it might be worth more than you think.

Wait until a dealership has one of those guaranteed trade in deals (for example they will give you a minimum of $4000 for your trade in) and then trade it in on a different car.

You could donate it to the fire department, they will use it to practice jaws of life techniques.
