Summer Story Ideas.

While reading CW's "This is different" I got to thinking we need a good series of stories or podcasts on the history of ISU Football, Basketball, the Athletic Dept itself and other big stories around sports the last 100 years of ISU sports. Growing in Iowa during the 80s and being a fan I kind of know what happened then but most of those stories are from the Big Peach or as people like Jim Zabble told them. My parents were never huge fans so I didn't grow up close to the program. Even though I spent the falls in a tractor listening to Pete call football games and watching the basketball teams of the 80s and 90s on TV I never knew the whole story.

So in short we need a good history lesson around here.

Zabel was absolutely horrible.

That out of the way...I agree with this idea 100%. After all, it is the 100th Farmageddon this year also. We get a weekly, if not, daily dose of Iowa State today and what everyone wants for the future, but we don't hear much about the past, unless it has to do with Jack Trice. I know we live in the present and live for the future, but to learn about how we got here as a university and fan base would be a nice summer series IMHO.

The transition from Clyde Williams to Jack Trice Stadium.
The Earl Bruce, Johnny Majors, Donnie Duncan years, etc.
Some of the stars of those teams that have passed, or have been overlooked in the history of Iowa State football.
The old Mizzou rivalry

I'm sure the lot of us can put together enough ideas to make it a very good series.

I don't know if CF has the resources, but it would be really cool to pull together a panel of players and coaches who participated in a landmark game or event and have them talk about their experiences and perspectives of it. CW could moderate, and you could either put it out as a podcast or edit and transcribe it into an oral history.

Gary Thompson is someone who could tell some stories and do it well.

I know how to spell his name but even in death have little respect for the man.

Before there was a Cyclone radio network, stations could individually broadcast Cyclone games. Every once in a while (when there wasn't a Hawk conflict) WHO would deign to broadcast Cyclone basketball. When Zabel would walk into Hilton and set up he would get roundly booed by students who had gotten there early to get seats. As I recall, he was a pretty good sport about it, waving and blowing kisses to us.

Cliff notes: ISU administration, starting at President level, didn't adequately value athletics, especially football. They rested on their laurels with some pretty good facilities that were built in the 70's. The one exception to an extended period of malaise and neglect was the incredible good fortune to attract Johnny Orr to ISU.

I haven't purchased it yet, but the guy at the Ford Dealership in Tipton told me about a book his son (Dylan Montz) and Alex Halsted wrote. Called "100 Things Iowa State Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die" Available on Amazon etc. Haven't read it yet (but I have it in my cart - waiting for $50 to get the free shipping.)

Looks like a good read and could maybe fill in some gaps for fans.

The full series here is a good idea, but I would recommend that book as well. I haven't finished it, but there is some cool stuff I definitely didn't know as a younger fan.
