Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

A team is judged on it's schedule, not it's conference. If you play a weak schedule your RPI, KenPom, and Sagarin rating will all reflect this. This is pretty basic stuff, and something that most college BB fans learn the first few years they follow college basketball.

Exactly.

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

Iowa and UNC are only unbeaten in conference power five teams left.

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

Why? If you're in a weaker league you're playing weaker opponents and should be penalized for it

While I agree that Iowa should not be in the No. 1 seed conversation at this point, there are exceptions to the weak conference/great team arguments and that was Indiana St. and Larry Bird. It does happen every 30 years or so, but sadly for Iowa, they do not have Larry Bird.

first off why shouldn't Iowa be consider a #1 seed as of right now??? 2nd big ten isn't mvc in the 70s.. 3 sadly for Iowa state they don't have magic Johnson..

Iowa only plays Rutgers and MN once each this year, so Iowa's conference schedule is more difficult than a team that plays those teams twice. It's not that difficult of a concept. When teams don't play the exact same games as every other team in their conference, their SOS within the conference is going to be different.

You're either trolling our resident hawk fans or stupid. Iowa should definitely be in the 1 seed conversation at this time. They have slapped around everyone since losing to us. Will they still be in the convo a month from now? Who knows, but if they keep winning they will be.

Must be trolling more than Hawk fans...

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

You posted conference RPI. Let's say for example Maryland had gone undefeated in regular season and lost 1 game in the Big Ten. Are you saying they wouldn't deserve the #1 spot because of the rest of the Big 10 sucked. Even though Maryland would have taken care of their business?

Not if a team in a tougher league had a similar record.

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

With how unbalanced conference schedules are now, just looking at a conferences RPI ranking overall tells you very little.

First of all, we don't have to worry about Iowa being a #1 seed.

Second of all, what does a tougher conference have to do with anything? Seriously it is about the schedule you play. Currently Iowa has the #5 conference strength of schedule and overall #10 SOS. Oklahoma has the #4 and ISU has the #7 conference SOS to date. Iowa 7-1, Oklahoma 6-2, ISU 5-3.

That will change, but if we are talking to date, and even including the loss they just had, they have played as tough a schedule as any Big 12 team (or anyone in the country for that matter) and have a better record to show for it in conference play.

You said everything we need to know right here. Iowa has garbage the rest of the way through while the B12 teams you mentioned still have multiple top 25 teams to play along with top 10s. Iowa got through the hardest part of their schedule relatively unscathed but even if they only drop another game or two, if teams from better conferences finish strong, they will jump Iowa and should.

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

They have four wins against current Top 25 teams, and if Purdue falls out it will be because Iowa has given them two losses.

They have the #12 toughest schedule so far.

Update: Now they have 5 wins vs. current AP Top 25 teams.

Re: Iowa MBB now a projected #1 seed

I'm not sure the Big 12 is as tough as people make it out to be. I didn't think the top teams looked very impressive at all against the SEC. Texas A&M beat ISU, Florida ran WVU off the court, Kansas barely beat a mediocre Kentucky team at home, and Oklahoma only won by 2 against a bubble team.

The Big 12 is the best conference in basketball right now top to bottom. It's not really a debate

Email Kenpom and the RPI. "People" are making it out to be that way because that is what the numbers prove.

They are probably the best mostly cause they only have 10 teams without the normal bottom feeders dragging the conference down. But what does the best this year mean? I don't think any conference this year is head and shoulders better than anybody else. Just a wacky year with a ton of good teams.

Oh so now in order to be the best you have to be WAY more best than everyone else? Go move your goalposts elsewhere.

So the Big 12 is the best conference in college basketball but they're not as tough as people think?
