NCAA in Des Moines

Yeah, I mean, it's not like a major, nationally-televised event that tens of thousands of people will attend, spending millions of dollars on tickets, hotels, and food. Pretty sure I could arrange it in an afternoon.

I sent them my host proposal. I had 5 waiters in tuxedos handing out whorederves, Kathy Griffin lined up for comedy, and the cup of grass was a performance by Crazytown. Can't believe they took ISU over that.

I could really go for a whorederve right about now...

Drake tried multiple times and were unsuccessful. They would only do it if Iowa State hosted. Assuming it's successful in Des Moines, that opens the door for Drake to host next time opening the door for Iowa State to play there in the future.

People book their hotels themselves. The hotels actually have people that can take care of that themselves.

People choose where to eat themselves. The restaurants actually have people that can take care of that themselves.

Wells Fargo Arena actually has people who can organize events like this. They know how to order concessions, catering, contact and arrange TV accommodations, and sell tickets.

I understand there are some things that an athletic department can help out with, but acting like this is something that only a big university can handle is ridiculous. The ISU AD isn't going to run this all by themselves.

I'm sure you're right. Purely ceremonial.

Wow, you should go into business as an event planner since you seem to have it all figured out.

I'd have a Plan B though, in case it doesn't work out.

Why would UNI take this on long term for future bids? Unless the money is so lucrative and it makes sense from that perspective, I don't see what is in it for them? At least for Drake or ISU, it supports the region of the state they are located and logistically is convenient to handle.

I don't care, just curious what the draw would be.

UNI has a major hard-on right now for getting into the Des Moines market, both athletically and academically. Around 80% of UNI's athletic contributions come from a 50 mile radius around Black Hawk County and right now, instead of trying to strengthen that, they are spending all of their marketing money and resources in Des Moines to try to get UNI alums down there.

It's the worst strategy ever and, hopefully, the new AD rectifies that. There is enough money in Black Hawk, Grundy, and Buchanan counties to run the department. They need to try to lock down that 8 county area and make it UNI country.

Ha. In all seriousness, look at this memo to the host institutions for the Division II football championship, something that garners a fraction of the interest that an NCAA regional does. It's not hard to see how stuff gets real complicated, real quick.

I really don't see anything in this document that would be beyond the means of a group like the Drake AD to run. Book some hotels, manage signage merchandising and messaging at the venue, some stuff with equipment. Honestly it doesn't look like much beyond what a school would do just hosting a conference home game. I would think this would be a simpler effort than something like the Drake Relays.

I understand you dont want the host playing at a host site if the host school is hosting the event in their home area (eg Louisville), but the rule needs to be changed if a school is hosting an event in a neutral court environment. I fail to see a single advantage ISU would have playing in Well Fargo and being the host.

You don't think ISU wound have a home court advantage if our tourney game were in DSM?

Well the NCAA obviously feels different, since it kept declining Drake.

Which school runs it is not the issue. Someone asked "how ******* hard could it be" and I just gave some context.

Where do Iowa St fans with tickets sign up to boycott sales to Hok fans??

And oh yah,
**** Iowa

We have all session tickets for the games. We plan to be in our Cardinal & Gold all weekend. If the Hawkeyes DO end up playing there, I will make sure to tell every one of them that I see "you're welcome", and then cheer (loudly) for whoever is playing against them...
because **** Iowa.

The terms and conditions document to even bid on lower-division Olympic sport championships is 40 pages long.

The actual host manual for MBB makes War and Peace look like **** and Jane.
