New commit - Dylan Soehner

He definitely has the size to contribute right away at a position of need. Starting to like where TE will be with Fernandez, Schaffner, now Soehner.

I have an Engineering degree from ISU. Living in Indiana and Michigan, I have worked with a lot of Purdue Engineers. I have found that Iowa State Engineers consistently out perform Purdue Engineers. That is my experience anyway. And that is why my son is studying Engineering at ISU and not Purdue.
The rankings don't support your assertion.

I know the rankings, but I also know the rankings are using different criteria than I am.

Don't get me wrong, Purdue is a great school and I have worked with some very good Engineers from Purdue. I have also worked with Engineers from Michigan, Michigan St., Penn St., MIT and other schools. From what I have seen, Iowa State engineers stack up very well against all those schools in the workplace. They are often the best performers and are often leaders. In most cases I have found Iowa State engineers to be a very hard working and driven group.

Purdue is a good school, but it is not even considered the best Engineering School in Indiana by most people in Indiana. That is Rose Hulman.

These kinds of TE's have been utilized quite well in the NFL. So hopefully ISU can use his pass catching abilities as a possible mismatch for his size. Hope they leave him at TE.

How much do ISU's engineering academic rankings impact football recruiting? Strange subplot to this thread

This...... As a professional that has been hiring ISU Engineers for over a decade, I can tell you that the name of the institution on your degree matters somewhat, but couple a solid education with a solid work ethic, and odds are you will go farther than you would have on just education alone.

If he ran with high knees in traffic he would have been unstoppable in High School. Tons of room for improvement but you can tell the athleticism is there.

Probably the top two TE's in CFB this year, Jake Butt from Michigan and Hunter Henry from Arkansas were 6'6"-250 and 6'6"-255, respectively. It's the trend and I think he's a huge benefit to the run game. Just imagine the Jumbo sets with him and possibly another big TE.

Hey guys,

Consider me a newly minted Cyclone fan. I've had the opportunity to broadcast Dylan's games the last few years and I might be able to shed some light on exactly what you're getting.

First off, Dylan is a great kid from a good family, very grounded young man and a good student. This isn't one you'll be worrying about away from Jack Trice.

On the field he was a QB until his sophomore season when the switch was made to TE. He is a much better athlete than he gets credit for. He can run, jump and block and very rarely drops a ball.

He's not a guy at the next level you want to split out... he should be an inline TE that you'll use to create mismatches with LB's or safeties.

He's a legit 6'7", he's playing basketball right now so his weight is down a bit. He wants to play TE and honestly you're doing yourself a disservice by not at least giving him a good look there. That's his natural position... we've heard the talk about playing OT that would be a huge transition for him.

A more natural change for him would be to DE which he has played for three years. I say this having all the confidence that he'll be playing TE for you next year.

The downside and there are basically two... he played at a lower classification and the offense he played in was a run oriented offense. He'll need some work at route running only because it wasn't stressed in High School.

I will submit this however as an example of what you're getting... in a quarterfinal playoff game in 2014 Dylan was matched up with one of the top Safety prospects in the country, a four star named La'Michael Pettway. Wherever Dylan went Pettway went and Dylan made enough plays for you to think he could handle himself at the next level. He did nothing this season that would cause me to think any differently.

You could be getting a very underrated player here. If he develops at the rate he has been the past few years he could really be something special in the very near future.

Zarns, thanks very much for posting here, and welcome! to Cyclone Country. Rivals lists Dylan as an offensive lineman, but someone here has posted that he'll play TE at Iowa State. I would guess, and it seems you agree, as Dylan matures physically and makes progress through the strength & conditioning program here, he could be a 6ft-7 monster. How would you categorize Dylan's speed? How was he getting open against that four-star you mentioned? Hope you stick around here at CF.

Welcome Zarns. After watching Dylan's highlights I thought many of the things you mentioned. Seems like a natural TE. He catches the ball really well. If he can learn to block and run routes at a Big 12 level, he could be a matchup nightmare for other teams.

He's a unique athlete, especially when you consider that he's still learning to play the game. He's made great strides each of the past two summers physically. The scary part is he's probably not done growing.

As far as speed goes… he's 6'7" 270. He's not running by anyone BUT when he gets the ball and turns his shoulders and heads up field it's like tackling a Greyhound Bus. He has serviceable speed now and I know he's going to camps to work on it.

He was intriguing enough as a prospect that Bama took a look at him on junior day.

He's mastered the art of shielding defenders and high pointing the ball. If you want to watch any of his games to get his highlights in context all of his teams games are posted on YouTube.

Search Prairie Grove Tigers 2013, 2014 or 2015. They are all there

He'll be an awfully athletic OL/DL guy.

Looks like Cambell is taking the Bielema route in regards to interior line recruiting

I doubt he stays at TE.

Anyone remember Andy Stensrud? He was a talent at TE yet they moved him to OT

Thanks for the info and welcome to Cyclone Nation!! I'm pretty excited for this kid to be a Cyclone. I know some of you may get mad at this, but I am hoping we use out TEs like Iowa does. Theit TEs are a massive part of their offense and they put a ton of them into the NFL. In fact, I would bet Iowa has more TEs in the NFL than ISU has total players. I think we will keep Soehner at TE and he will be very good for our new offense.
