There are two types of fans here. The ones that are concerned were expecting the team to compete for a regular season league title/final 4. If you have these level expectations, (like I did) you are going to be concerned, as there are some red and yellow flags.

If you have the expectation of finishing 2-4 in the B12, and a making a run in the dance to say, sweet 16, then indeed, relax.

I rest my case. There are (or were) two sets of expectations running around here.

I know the term "depth" is like a curse word around here, but it is a valid issue. This team is getting tired at the end of games (Oklahoma, Baylor). The other one is they don't seem to have that killer instinct, but again.... There's that pesky word again, "depth," as when they get up, they do relax to conserve energy. A 7 man rotation can and does work, but those 7 players better be having a pretty even split of minutes. That's not the case here.

I'm kind of in the middle of that- I did expect to compete for the Big 12 championship, but more importantly, for a deep run in the tournament. The first one is off to a rough start (but not yet impossible), but the second is fine. Just need to finish strong, as seeding is important in making a run.

My defense mechanisms are at play here, and I'm fooling myself big time. But I keep telling myself that this team might go further in the NCAA with a lower seed.

Naz goes down however media hype surrounding "depth" heats up. We have an injury problem more than we have a depth issue. Those two problems can lead to same issues (not enough players, over-playing some players, etc.) but our depth was fine when the season started knowing Burton was coming along.

Why do people keep comparing this year to last year like it's a good thing? With all the similarities everyone brags about, I suppose we should expect a first round loss just like last year to0?

What scares me is the "depth" issues root now, but flower late in the season as fatigue takes its toll.

Expectations need to change. When Naz went down, ISU went to 7 Big12 caliber players. Like Herb says, Cooke and Burton need to be playing closer to 20 min / game to allow MM, McKat, Georges to have the energy to close out a game.

ISU will be a tourney team, just not a top seed and not a "favorite" to make it to Houston. However, I don't mind this team showing up as a 6 seed and "flying" under the radar. If they can get things to click, they may be one of the most dangerous teams to face.

I think we just need to realize that ISU is not going to win the conference and may finish around 5th.
Yikes...this is a team with a guy that can be the National Player of the year (Niang), one of the top PGs in the country (Morris) and a guy that is supposed to be a rim protector (McKay) and this is what we have sunk to. This was supposed to be ISU's year. I am resigned to the fact that the Big 12 regular season title is probably out of reach now. But 5th? This is so Iowa State...

I realize Hoiberg left us in a bad spot but we still have talent and should be able to be 12-6 in conference. If we pee these games down our legs this week, lock the doors because bad things will happen the rest of the season for these guys. Hopefully they decide to play some defense and maybe send more than a couple of guys half heartedly for offensive rebounds.

No, this is so CF. Our list of don't haves is just as long as haves. We just are not that talented IMO. We don't have a single elite two-way player and only one good one.

I'm more scared of dropping games we shouldn't along the way because we don't want to get fouls. Take out the UAB game and the last few years we always played best at the end of the season and we played our main guys a ton of minutes

Except it's now been shortened to the conference season and this is a group that said they wanted the crown. The fan base built up their hopes to match what the players have said for a couple years now. I don't think you'd see nearly as much disappointment if we were walking away from games feeling like the team left their best 40 minutes on the floor. The problem lies in the same types of defeats, followed by the same canned responses about it being a wake up call blah blah blah. I agree that the fans will generally take the losses harder than the team, but at this point it doesn't seem like that takes very much.
With another OU game and KU game in Hilton in next two weeks, our conference fate may be determined if good or bad.

With all things being equal the odds of that happening a second time (3 v. 14 upset) have to really really small. The dumb thing is that we actually have been here before. We lost as 2 seed in '01, have we gotten upset in every first round where we've been the higher seed since then? JFC it's the NCAA tournament move on, if you aren't getting upset every so many years you're probably never putting yourself in that position to begin with.

I don't know which thread to post in first.

I'll start w/ most positive spot and work my way around, I guess.

Not to ignore the weak points of the team's performance this year, but one thing didn't help: That Baylor loss shellshocked them, rattled their confidence. Almost like they fear the other shoe is about to drop.

I think they got some of it back with the late rally to force OT, but again, too late to expect to pull it off.

It the opposite of needing a wake-up call or "not taking opponent seriously," as we heard last season.

It's not attitude or effort. They are legitimately trying. They Just don't know how to play defense. They are going to have to rely on their offense to win games. It is just who they are and it's not going to change.

We can relax.
On the Texas boards they're saying we're a good team that they think has a real chance of making the tournament, probably .500 in conf play!
So we have that.
