Any word on what direction Campbell wants to go with his DC? Haven't seen much about this side of the ball so I thought I'd start a thread.

There was a report yesterday about him bringing two of the lower defensive side coaches with him. But nothing on the DC.

I expect Rasheed to be our DL coach (he has Fla. contacts) and we already have the LB coach and 1 secondary coach hired. Toledo ran with 4 defensive coaches and 2 of those were in the secondary. I fully expect the entire Toldedo staff here if they do not hire from within to fill Campbell's position.

Is anyone out recruiting players for us at this point?

From what I understand, they are focused on current targets (both from our previous staff and from when they were at Toledo and Illinois) and commits first, and working to expand on what they need to fill the class. Will see them out on the road in the next couple of days, I would guess.

TOLEDO, OH – University of Toledo vice-president & athletic director Mike O'Brien announced that assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Jon Heacock will serve as the Rockets' interim head football coach, replacing Matt Campbell who was named the new head coach at Iowa State University today. O'Brien said that a national search for Campbell's permanent replacement will begin immediately.

In addition to serving as the head coach at YSU, Heacock also served as the Penguins' defensive coordinator under Jim Tressel for six years (1992-96, 2000) and defensive backs coach for an additional year (1991), which included Division I-AA national championships in 1991, 1993 and 1994. In between his stints on the YSU staff, Heacock served as the defensive coordinator at Indiana from 1997-99.

Heacock, a 32-year veteran of the college football coaching ranks, has helped shape Toledo's defense into one of the best in the Mid-American Conference.
The Rockets rank No. 1 in the MAC scoring defense (21.1 points per game) and second in rushing defense (115.5 yards per game) this season.
In 2014, the Rockets ranked No. 1 in the MAC in rushing defense (116.2 yards per game) after ranking fifth in that category (170.4) in 2013, as well as ranking seventh in scoring defense (28.6 points per game), the season prior to Heacock's arrival.

So it remains to be seen if he is just coaching them in the bowl game and coming here after the bowl game or staying as the new head coach.

Toledo defensive coordinator Jon Heacock has been named the team’s interim coach, according to sources.
Heacock, 55, has held his position the last two seasons. He’s taking over for former Rockets coach Matt Campbell, who is Iowa State’s new coach. Toledo (9–2, 6–2 MAC) will be making its fifth straight bowl appearance.

So it remains to be seen if he is just coaching them in the bowl game and coming here after the bowl game or staying as the new head coach.

Campbell won't be able to wait until the end of December to name a DC. He was pretty clear yesterday when talking about the process he envisioned that he wants to get all his coaches to Ames and on the recruiting trail before the open window closes.

I think Campbell will probably go another direction from his former DC.

At least their bowl game will be played early.

Guess we did score 23 points against their DC with our second string qb.

Is it normal to fill out assistants without having a coordinator in place?

I don't think so unless you already know who the DC is and are not announcing it. I'm guessing he is waiting to see if his old DC gets the Toledo job and/or after their bowl game; he hasn't hired anyone who wasn't on the Toledo staff at some point yet.

Wow, really, why? It always seemed like Shane was our top recruiter and just begging for a DC job. What makes you say zero chance?

There's a chance he could stay on where he's at now, but no way he gets promoted to DC. More than likely the Toledo DC will come over after he coaches the bowl game
