Realistic Expectations

With a dominate Nader thinking 12 pts 7 boards on average we could really surprise. I like that were pushing putting pressure on the ball more instead of the dont foul philosophy that ended up with us getting killed by 3 pointers. With those two things in mind I only see 4-5 regular season losses.

Win the Emerald Coast Classic, win the Big12, win the Big12 Tournament, win the National Championship.
Now we're talking!

I expect the regular season to go 25 - 5. 14 - 4 in Big 12. The last two years, 4 losses would have won the conference regular season title. This year depends on how well KU and OU play and finish. 1st or 2nd in conference tournament. Elite 8 or more in NCAAs.

I base that on the fact that we have 4 seniors, plus Monte. I think all the seniors have their best career seasons at ISU. (After all, that's what seniors generally do.) Monte might play himself into the NBA.

I think the bench will be solid enough to play 7-8 in conference - which was a winning formula for the 99 - 00 teams. Chemistry will get better throughout the season.

I think team defense and focus on the road improve due to the senior factor, desire and Prohm's focus on it. I also like his motto for this season: win the day. Keep them focused on the moment - not on their press clippings.

We'll go undefeated at Hilton this year. The seniors won't have it any other way!

JMHO

Need Nader/Burton/Thomas/Cooke to be a threat off the dribble. We resorted to letting Monte and Georges go 1-on-1 every possession late last season because nobody else could create.

I think this is the thread where we're supposed to IGNORE any possibility of the following: frontcourt depth issues, foul trouble, injuries, several great opponents, new coaching staff, veteran top-notch opposing big12 coaches, etc., and predict an UNDEFEATED season. And don't forget to mention the games on the road in the big12 that are supposed to be in the bag already. Saves from getting bashed on this board. My own expectations are to enjoy EVERY single win we get and not get bent out of shape over a loss.

Screw it. My expectations are really high. I expect the Final Four. This is why:

MM is the best point guard in the country (IMO). He's very similar to Tyus Jones
Niang is focused on improving his rebounding (hopefully at least blocking out better)
McKat has developed an outside shot
MT seemed to "figure it out" at the end of the year. Nobody has ever questioned his work ethic, just his consistency
Deonte Burton is a manchild
We've seen glimpses of Nader being great and we always hear about how unstoppable he is during practice
Cooke has a short track record but it looks very good
Simeon Carter has impressed so far
Long is one of the best clutch shooters in the country and seems to be progressing well from his surgeries
Niang and Long are physically and mentally tough leaders that leave their hearts on the court every single game

The issues this team needs to address:
Two out of the five of Thomas, Cooke, Long, Nader and Burton need to be healthy and consistently hit threes.
Two more of these five need to be at least competent
It would be nice if Carter and/or Ernst can give them some quality minutes. Not a lot but at least some
Backup point guard - not too worried as Long looked pretty good there last year and Cooke should be able to help

Edit: These issues are not major issues and should, realistically, be overcome.

Yes. I'm wearing Cardinal and Gold colored shades but, screw it, I'm not underselling these guys.

I would like one of what the gentleman on the floor is having.

I'd be very happy with finishing 2nd in the league, staying in the top 10-15 most of the year, and going to the Sweet 16.

Anything more than that would be gravy for me.

This for me. I do think not getting to the Final 8 would leave a bad taste in my mouth if we lose to a worse seed to advance.

This is a healthy outlook.

However, the listed possibilities with the exception of the frontcourt depth and new coaching staff, are issues that every single power conference team in the country may have to face. I do think this team could lose a couple of games early in the year that they shouldn't lose while they mesh. But, come end of season, they will be ready to roll. If they end up at .500 I won't be real upset as this Niang and Long era has been a blast and basketball isn't super high on my priority list but I seriously think this team is something special.

If you just satisfied with beating Iowa you're obviously not a basketball fan. This isn't football, we are supposed to beat Iowa in basketball.

win either the big 12 regular or tournament title.
2-5 seed
Sweet 16

First things first, this ISU team has the talent to win the National Championship this year. A major 3-headed monster with Niang/Morris/McKay too. But, we all know how crazy March can get, and how the brackets shake out determines a lot as well. Duke lost in the first round 2 years ago, then won the whole thing this past year. ISU will rebound this year when tourney time comes.

Big 12:
I think ISU either wins the conference outright, ties for 1st with KU or gets runner-up again. None of this 3rd place ****... ISU is going to win or get runner up. *ISU and KU will be the cream of the crop again. Who knows with the Big 12 Tourney, but I like ISU's chances to win it again.

I don't think the guys will miss a step with Prohm at the helm. He runs the same sets as Fred did offensively. He will need to continue to be open minded on what works with the guys as well. I'm excited for him to see REAL big time basketball. He's going to love HILTON MAGIC.

Still, I expect ISU to get to the Sweet 16, and see how it shakes out. Not getting to the Sweet 16 would be a major disappointment and unacceptable. (ISU could be a 1-seed and get upset in the S-16, but getting to the Sweet 16 with a brand new coach would be a great story.)

If Prohm can get ISU to the Final 4, he should get all the credit.

GO CYCLONES!
