NBC ranks ISU back court in the also considered,

Sounds about right, especially considering the surgeries to Long and Cooke. Monte is obviously top-notch, but I'm not sure anyone else is close to the same level at this point. Of course, that could change in a major way if Long/Cooke recover fully and get their game back and/or Burton dominates as the 2. At least, that's what I'm hoping will happen by the end of the regular season.

And why would ISU be? It's a large drop off to the next guard after Monte as far as talent is concerned.

Can we get a Thread Title 101 class up in here. Been terrible the last few weeks.

That being said, we are not a top back court at all.

That's not bad when you figure we have to have one of the better front courts in the nation.

Why would it be highly ranked?

If it was a PG ranking, then I see your point... But we have a committee of players at the 2 guard.

We have the potential to have an outstanding back court, but right now only Morris deserves recognition. We'll have to see how Long, Cooke, Thomas, Burton, and Nader pan out to see where our back court stands. Yes, that ranking was including SF's in the back court.

It's surprising they don't rank is higher considering our former coach is the coach of the Bulls. All of that publicity is so valuable.

How does Jake Layman get included for Maryland? Really stretching the backcourt definition there.

They are including SF's. Layman does play on the perimeter quite a bit. They should have said top perimeter groups instead of back court.

Almost every big plays on the perimeter quite a bit. I think your position is who you can defend.

That's not true. PF's and Centers don't play on the perimeter very often if at all. It's takes an above average skillset for those types to set up on the perimeter as it allows the defense to pack the paint without having to match up on a big on the perimeter.

You can't even throw the ball around the perimeter without a 4th guy in there.

Ok you are technically correct. You can have PF/C help swing the ball or set up screens out at the perimeter, but they don't set their own offense there and the don't stay there long. They spend the bulk of their time spacing on the baseline, or establishing a post position in the paint.

SF's on the other hand resemble PF's but also double as SG's. They prefer to get the ball on the perimeter and either shoot the 3 or take their defender off the dribble and drive the lane. The better SF's can post up as well. Stretch 4's are PF's that can shoot the 3, but don't have the handle of SF's and can't drive the lane with the dribble effectively.

And Layman does? He's a stretch 4.

No he's a SF but versatile enough to play PF at times. Layman has a handle where PF's generally don't. Niang is the same way. He's a SF, but has the complete PF toolset. We've never really played Niang at the SF spot, but we utilize those skills on offense. SF's are very hard to defend as they can create mismatches against either a guard or a big.
