Aliens?

Good question....I guess we hope they are peaceful? Maybe they have not found Earth yet which may be a good thing.

If this happens to be true, I wonder how long their civilization has been around...did we both start at the same time and they made some advances quicker then we did here? Are they much older or even younger then our civilization? So many questions! Would they be peaceful and help our technology to advance to assist in exploration or are we/Earth just some resources to be used for their needs?

First they would need to give us the space cash test.

I don't think it would disprove religion. Religion might have to adjust some things, but it would survive. It might settle the young earth debate once and for all. Or maybe not. It just depends on how intelligent the aliens are. I have no doubt, however, that at least one of the world's major religions would declare the aliens to be evil. But, that just might be the nature of man, rather than the nature of religion.

Then again, if the aliens brought the technology to make pan-galactic gargle blasters with them, perhaps they'd be greeted with open arms.

Did the article say how far away the Death Star is? How far back are we looking?

I have no idea why people say things like this.

Because it would disprove most major religions?

I'm with Janny...

I don't want to get this thread knocked off the main page, but its already been thusly sidetracked, so just to say for example many branches of Christianity would be fine with aliens. The main question for yes or no there is did "the Fall" and then the redemption apply only to Earth or the whole universe? But yes there would be disagreements about special creation or guided evolution, etc. But many of the religions are compatible with little to no adjustment.

For example, C.S. Lewis wrote three "sci-fi/fantasy" books about Earth being "fallen" while the other planets were not (see 'Perelandra'), which is a similar theme for last portion of Walker Percy's 'Lost in the Cosmos' (he was Catholic, but more of a mainstream novelist).

More examples...The Vatican has an official astronomer (a Jesuit with degrees from MIT and Harvard), leases space at the observatories in AZ and Chile, and there was a famous story where they said they would baptize an alien...if they asked!

Even the (prot christian) physics prof who got run from ISU for working on an "intelligent design" book was looking at "exoplanets"/habitability zones for similar earths. (Though he was not hopeful...see NASA article from when he was at UW before ISU)

Mormonism, Hindusim, Buddhism, could also go along with aliens...

So anyway, SETI will check for radio waves in January. Jodie Foster will be sent soon after.

Is the January information brand new? I knew they were seeking approval for this. How long will it take before we have updated information available? pumped up as long as the aliens are not like V or anything like that.

The original Atlantic article said January at earliest, this article said SETI arrays were starting to investigate a few days ago:

Astronomers have begun using the Allen Telescope Array (ATA), a system of radio dishes about 300 miles (483 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco, to hunt for signals coming from the vicinity of KIC 8462852, a star that lies 1,500 light-years from Earth.

Also answered the light years question...1,500!

Does anyone else ever get this mind-tripping feeling when reading or thinking about the galaxy and how small we are in proportion to it let alone the entire universe?

I know that feeling. I wonder if other life forms have greedy and corrupt satanic nazis in control of their lives like we do.

On another note, a couple hours ago I went out to smoke on my break and saw a bright green meteor fall from the sky. It was amazing. 4th one I have seen at work in the last 2 years.
