Iowa's perimeter D

Last season, Minnesota, Maryland, Iowa State (Richardson to an extent) and Tennessee exposed Iowa's lack of speed on the outside. Minnesota especially killed them with jet sweeps and pitches.

Is Iowa State equipped to do that this season? We haven't seen many jet sweeps out of Mangino, and when we do, the timing is horrific. I would love to see us execute it with Daley, Wesley or even Bundrage.

Of course, accurate passes from Richardson on bubble screens are huge.

I guess what I'm asking is does Iowa still lack speed on the outside, or do they have any new players that are capable of cleaning that up? Because they were awful at times last season.
 
They seemed pretty quick on Saturday. Maybe Illinois State was just really slow. I expected the same old Iowa we have seen the last few years but they definitely had a jump in their step. Although it is pretty much the same players as last year.
 
Ill St didn't really challenge it from what I saw (had the game on, but didn't see it as I was doing other things).

Nobody knows. Its been said many times but I'll say it again, neither team knows what they have.
 
This is where we will dominate. Their LBs are great at plugging holes, not chasing 200 lb receivers, or runningbacks for that matter. Look for lots of 1-step drops that get the balls to our WRs in space.
 
Well it's not last season, so not sure if that a valuable scouting report or not. I would expect ISU to try to test the Iowa defense in many ways.

And no, Ill St isn't slow. I don't no how much we can take from a one game sample where the Iowa d-line owned a pretty green FCS o-line though.
 
Edge contain was apparently a huge, huge part of the offseason coaching. Last year, especially at LB, we were really green, and really bad. But, a year has passed, and judging by comments from the staff, people that have seen practices, and the Ill St. game, they have really improved. Definitely still a ways to go, but they have been improving. Throw in Ott, and Meir (who is roughly the same size as Pierson) at DE, and our contain is pretty good.

Ameslurker- They did challenge a bit early on, but Ott and Meier were having good success setting the edge, and forcing them back into the middle. Completely agree with your last sentence though.
 
I would say what happened last season is mostly from inexperienced LBs being out of position and reacting slowly instead of a speed thing. They are probably better this year but the LBs are still the best area to attack their defense. Will be interesting to see if they stick with 3 LBs when we are running 4 WR sets.

If Iowa has the same players, I don't see it changing a lot. Renewed focus can only do so much. Really want to see Daley in space.

So, essentially you are saying players cant improve from year to year, mentall and physically? Wow

You know who was originally really bad at edge contain? Kirksey, Morris and Hitchens. They are all now with NFL teams

The best part is they will just keep letting the LB vs. WR matchup happen until the bitter end.

Exactly. thos teams were both a shell of their teams last year
 
They moved Trever Ryan to tailback specifically for that reason(he's the kid with the punt return TD last game). We have tons of speed for the edes. Just need to get Richardson clicking and we should gash people this year. Iowa's d was very vanilla against Il St. So it's hard to know what they will try to slow us down. We have tons of play makers to choose from.

I agree with your last statement. They tried it several times early and just got stuffed (to the point where I wondered why they were trying it at all).

Tyler impressed me with his speed early, so if we can get some interference from our line, I think he has the wheels to do it.
 
Brown and Ryan can get to the perimeter with ease. So can Warren, he's not quite as quick but he's also harder to bring down out there. Daley, Epps, and Wesley could also be very dangerous if they have a LB trying to cover them.
 
I hear that the creators of America Needs Another Lawyer are disappointed in the ability of the D

Fisher and Neimann are new starters at linebacker, Jewell moved from olb to mlb and miles taylor is new at FS.

I couldn't find a depth chart from last year so these are on memory. Obviously the defensive tackles are new as well but that was a strength last year.
