So he was. Since Weiskamp was offered by ISU under the Hoiberg regime though there's no way he ends up being a bust. Hoiberg does no wrong.

My wild guess, Hoiberg himself had nothing to do with offering this kid. That said, I'm sure he'll still be good in a few years.

Well Hoiberg was the Head Coach when they offered, and Otz may not even be kept on as an assistant so I doubt he was given free rein. Scholarship offers aren't just given out freely without the go ahead from the HC, I'm sure Hoiberg was fully on board.

Scholarships can also be pulled after they are offered. I do believe Fred had a really good idea he was moving on when the offer was extended, so it wouldn't surprise me if he gave Otz permission to make the calls.

No matter what the new coach has to be on board with all scholarships already offered.

"Watch me make Fran offer a ninth-grader in Muscatine, of all places".

*snicker*

Why would Fred care? He was already out the door, I doubt he was micro managing Otz. It's not like the kid could have signed, the new coach could choose whether the offer was still active or not.

It's funny to see an Iowa fanboy basing their recruiting off Hoiberg though.

Sure he does. He left ISU for ****** sakes and he signed multiple players that were busts.

I'll put myself on record as liking Weiskamp. I'm not going to dis him.

I have no idea if Wieskamp will pan out but with that being said, am I the only one that's annoyed by the fact that all these kids who are decent prospects and grow up Hawk fans actually commit and play for their favorite team? I know we've had better players so I'm not complaining about that but I'm relatively annoyed that the kids who grow up diehard Cyclone fans choose not to become Cyclones for the most part, even though ISU is clearly the dominant basketball program in the state.

/End rant.

UI, specifically GB, absolutely got played with the last contract. But overall, given the success Iowa has achieved with KF, BCS bowls, top-10 finishes, conference titles, top draft picks, etc., he's absolutely been worth the investment. The game has simply passed him by. We'll have to see how far the program will be set back because he's overstayed his usefulness by 3-4 years now.

This. KF could have gone to the NFL after the 2002-04 run when his stock was the highest. He didn't, and had the averageness of 2005-07 before the 2008-09 seasons happened. At which point Barta overreacted and gave KF a 10-year contract extension.

I don't get the overreaction by some schools to success (or perceived success). Minnesota just gave Pitino a $400k a year raise for 2 years of not making the NCAA tournament.

These kids' parents are my age/generation. These families are still living in the 80s-90s in regards to Hok sports. They brainwash their kids about just how "great" the Hoks are. I am a HS teacher and these kids act just like their parents - totally despise ISU and any team that isn't Iowa (unless the Hoks don't make a bowl game or the NCAA tourney -then they are all chanting "GO BIG 10!"), and make excuses if the Hoks lose to ISU. Most of these students are spouting off how the hoks are now going to "own" ISU in hoops because Fred left.
That said, the Hoks could very well have three 4 or 5 star recruits in the next few years. BUT, remember, 2 of them are Franny's kids. If Wieskamp has a good relationship with them and his parents are the typical fanatical Hok family, it only makes sense that he'd pick Mad Fran's program. Sometimes you don't necessarily have to be a really good program to bring in some top recruits - mutations/anomalies do occur in every gene pool, especially the hok gene pool.

Still can't wrap my mind around how a kid would prefer to play in Carver over Hilton. The atmosphere isn't even close.

My guess is that ISU would have had more success in getting a guy like Harrison Barnes to go to ISU had you not been in the midst of the McDermott years at the time. Wieskamp may end up being a good player, but I doubt he would be committing to Iowa if this was 2009 and Lickliter was in the midst of taking the Iowa program into the dumpster. Devyn Marble was a Hawk legacy (not super highly recruited) but it took some additional convincing to get him to come to Iowa once Fran came on.

And FYI, not all the Hawk fans growing up in Iowa end up going to play in Iowa City. Marcus Paige (maybe he wasn't an Iowa fan, don't know), Kiah Stokes, and there have been some others on the football side.

We (Hawk fans) could say the same thing about a player like Lazard, who went on to play for ISU even though the program has not been good and he could have played most anywhere. Note: I applaud Mr. Lazard for not taking the easy road and going to OU or Notre Dame or wherever else that is guaranteed to win 9+ games per year. Good players get noticed by the pros, whether they go to one of the traditional powers or not. College choices depend on a lot of factors. The ISU program appears to be at a place now where if you have a highly ranked guy coming up who is an ISU fan he'd be likely to go to Ames.

There been any since Barnes? I never blamed Barnes for going somewhere else, the future looked real dim when he had to commit.

Recruiting fans isn't working out that great for Iowa so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

They found a hidden gem in White and outside of that it's been all Hawkeye fan families and a legacy kid who really improved over his 4 years.

It probably wouldn't change our program that much if we started getting the top player in the state every other year, but it would change Iowa's if ISU did that. People always say there is room for both programs to be great in basketball. That is true, but not if we both recruited the way Iowa does. The way Iowa is so in state focused, if Iowa, UNI and ISU all depended on in state like that they would all 3 probably suck.

I gotta a dollar that says they won't.

The only in state kid that Fran brought in who has worked out for Iowa was a thug transfer
