Correct, this is a very good team coming back but it's not a top job overall.
Have we done the complete Applebee's burger test yet? I know that the Otzelburger was floated and has a pretty good sound to it. How are these?
Drewburger - not bad
Prohmburger - sorta sounds like Prawn burger so this could be a seafood patty.
Altmannburger - nope
Stallingsburger - doesn't sound like something worth waiting for
Hornyburger - depending upon your mood this could work
Underwoodburger - nope again (Underwearburger - see Hornyburger)
Dixonburger - not a good choice
Note: In the Twin Cities there is a small chain of burger restaurants called MyBurger. If this was named after Jamie Dixon you definitely wouldn't want to order his DixonMyBurger.

Hes got a big name in Scrabble! I don't think he's a reasonable candidate though.
I am at the point where I like all 4 of these candidates and think all four have a decent chance of being successful. My feeling is TJ probably has the highest likelyhood of immediate success and the least risky in reaching our highest ceiling for next year. But am not as confident after that (I would look to the interview to glean more here). Depends on how he capitalizes on momentum. So I view him as "least risky" short term and "most risky" long term.
Recruiting for yourself and for Fred are different, and can others recruit for him? What about recruiting transfers?
The other 3 I think would do well next year but may start slower or never hit their full potential I do think all 3 are very good coaches however and would keep ISU basketball on the map. I am fine with any of the 4 on paper. It will come down to personality and fit and their vision (and TJ'S case his assistants). I have confidence in Leath and Pollard to make the right call.

Classic Iowa state fans. We make the tournament a few straight years. Win the big 12 tournament twice. Now all our fans think the top coaches in the game should be running to JP offering to coach for half the price because we're such a big basketball program.
Get real guys. We will have a good year next year but after that... It might be kind of rough for a couple years and as you have seen, it's hard to recruit guys to come to Iowa state, even our great Fred couldn't do it very well.

Tad Boyle should be considered a "splash" in the same way as a turd hitting the toilet water. That's a splash alright...
you may be right. But we should all remember this if (God forbid) we are looking for a football coach soon.
If our top 25 team can't draw a good coach, probably the best we can hope for in football is the Iowa falls jv coach.
I think he was saying we were doomed with Hoiberg and without him we should expect even less. My suggestion is this guy needs to stop watching Iowa State football. That is the only explanation for the doom and gloom. It's hard not to fall into the loser mentality when you watch ISU get ***** slapped on the gridiron by NDSU and Kansas but basketball is an entirely different story. ISU basketball can and should be a winner.
I don't think Tad Boyle would be a bad choice but I like the analogy more than I disagree with its meaning.
I just realized no one is really making the comparison between this hiring and the hiring following Johnny Orr and instead are comparing it to Wayne Morgan. I think the comparison between Jim Hallihan and TJ are a bit closer. I don't recall Hallihans recruiting but both long time assistants in the program lots of people pushing for them. Continuity ect. ect. I also think many people also wanted the big name coach which we got with Tim Floyd. Thought?

Iowa State has gotten so much exposure and is considering one of the best fanbases around the country. Not only do we have a top ten team next year, but fan support is through the roof. ISU was able to bring in some decent coaches in Orr, Floyd, and Eustachy. Just because we struck out with Morgan and McDoormat, it doesn't mean our program is awful. Those were two pathetic hires and Hoiberg made our program relevant again. There's no reason to think we can't land anyone when a school as pathetic as Virginia Tech (no tradition, no success in the past, even under Greenberg, and horrible facilities) can land a guy like Buzz Williams, there's no reason to think we can't get a decent name. Losing Hoiberg sucked but there's no reason to believe that we can't make a good hire and get a decent name just because you have no confidence left in our program. If this list of four candidates is really all that we have to offer, JP needs to be fired.
Floyd wasn't a big name at the time though. Just a small school coach who had made some waves.
