Derek Fisher is one of those stories that makes me dislike the NBA.

Guy is traded to Houston. Houston then has to try and convince him to report. Fisher doesn't want to report so the Rockets have to pay the guy and let him choose his own team.

For some reason that just rubs me the wrong way
 
Let's say fred sticks it out awhile longer and makes it known he is grooming TJ to take over at some point.

Do you all still want a new coach when FH leaves?

Some of you talk about gambling with TJ like he would set the program back a decade, or turn into a Wayne Morgan hire. Even Wayne Morgan got to the NCAA tournament and the NIT in his 3 years. McDermott, with all his experience, who most would think was a sure thing, was waaaay worse than Morgan.

I never thought McDermott was a "sure thing". The hire was pretty dumb, IMO, but was a better option at that time. Right now, however, ISU is in a better spot than they were with the McDermott hire. There are mid-major coaches who have proven they can BOTH recruit and win at a much higher level than anyone else. A guy like Archie Miller is a perfect example. He recruits better than quite a few high major schools despite being at Dayton. We have a top ten team, easily, maybe even top 5 preseason so IF Fred leaves (I don't think he will), it's not like we would be stuck with a McDoormat hire. Saying that is pretty foolish.

i would have to accept it. But I still don't think tj is the best we can do.
 
So, is this what has transpired?

1. Gar/Pax decide that they need to get rid of Tibs and hire Fred.
2. Jerry Reinsdorf says "Fine, but I'm not happy about paying two coaches for two years so try not to release him."
3. Gar/Pax decide they will trade Tibs but can't keep their mouths shut about it.
4. New Orleans shows interest in Tibs but figures "Why should we trade anything when they're going to release him anyway."
5. Tibs knows he may not be welcome back in Chicago and says, "I won't agree to be released from my contract (i.e. NBA coaches can't be traded. However, a second team can offer the first team compensation to release the coach from his contract. The coach would also need to agree to be released. From a practical standpoint, the coach would only do this if a new, comparable or better contract is already agreed to with the second team) unless I get additional compensation from the new team."
6. Gar/Pax floats a rumor that Orlando is willing to pay 7-9 million per year for Tibs. This is to try to trick New Orleans into agreeing to pay Tibs the money that he wants to be released.
7. New Orleans says, "I see your game. We're not paying him that much. We like Gentry about as much and we won't have to pay him 7-9 million per year."
8. In the meantime, Flip Saunders wants to hire Fred but either wants to coach for one more year or Glen Taylor says, "I've lost some money these last few years and don't want to pay a coach and GM when I already have one guy that can do both." Or maybe Fred says, "I don't want to coach this young roster now but give them another year of development and I will consider it."

Chicago and Minnesota are the two teams that Fred would consider working for due to several reasons.

Chicago
1. Work for a close friend in Gar Forman
2. Relatively close proximity to relatives, in-laws and friends in Ames
3. Roster that is ready to compete at a very high level at this time.
4. Probably greater pay than the Minnesota job.
5. Comfort level from having lived there for four years.

Minnesota
1. Work for a close friend in Flip Saunders
2. He gets along well with Garnett who will be with the Timberwolves for the next couple of years in some capacity.
3. Young roster with potential but will need developing over the next couple of years.
4. Closest proximity to relatives, in-laws and friends in Ames.
5. Wife's best friend lives in the Twins Cities lessening her anxiety about uprooting the kids from school. If Mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy.
6. Comfort level from having lived there for several years.

This is my overblown theory about what has transpired so far. Go ahead and rip.

yoy are right. This year we are screwed.

But the comment was if Fred is having second thoughts and will stay just one more year.

Ultimately I think Fred feels comfortable leaving because he has established a brand, that sells itself, and thinks TJ is more than capable of running.

Maybe that is the best he could figure out.

If it were less than 4 years we were waiting I'd want someone else. TJ just has virtually no experience in a successful program (other than juco), especially if you take Fred out of the equation. I'm also not sold on him as a recruiter without Fred to develop his guys. For all the credit he gets as a recruiter, his guys weren't living up to their expectations....until Fred came along. I LOVE the Fred/TJ combo but when you look at his resume, TJ has little success without Fred. Meanwhile....we didn't miss a beat when TJ departed.
 
Why not give TJ a chance? Do you honestly think that Iowa State is the place for top successful coaches come and end their career?

You want a coach that wants to be here, not the coach that wants to use Iowa State as a stepping stone.

More experience would be ideal, but find it hard to believe that if fred had any doubt in tj's abilities that he would've spent a little more time with his decision for an assistant.

At this point, the tj doubters, are all really doubting fred as well.

Doubt it's TJ and that JP would give too much weight to Fred's recommendation. You're kidding yourself if you think JP will listen to Fred's input on his successor. Dean Smith was the only one in recent memory that pretty much named his successor. Coach K will probably be the next one able to do that.

i guess I would doubt Fred on this because I see it as a justification to himself for leaving. Much like the argument that we are better off if he leaves this year.

But it if we get a year more of Fred and have to hire tj to get it, I'd do it.

Are u kidding? CPR. JP hired that guy who wants to be here for life and he's gone soon and not by choice.

No one thinks we should hire TJ over Fred, so what's the point of this?

Fred's experience before coming here was with the Timberwolves. They were god-awful. Are you really blaming on assistant coach for the bad teams during the McDermott era? How good were TJ's teams before he got to ISU? Or does that not matter?
