Official 2015 Hoiberg NBA Speculation Thread

It all does kind of have the feeling of all of those "NBA 8 team 16 player mega-trades" that you hear about that never come to fruition because one team wanted an unprotected second round pick but their partner in the 8 team deal would only give a protected pick so the entire 8 team deal fell through.

Yeah it does and it could fall through just because the Bulls front office is a mess. They let everyone know they don't want one of the best coaches in the league and then expect other teams to give them something for him and pay him what Chicago owes him. The Chicago reporters all say they don't want to fire him because they have to pay the full salary regardless and they won't do anything until they have a commitment from a new coach. They could end up stuck with a coach they don't get along with and have now made the relationship even worse. Why anyone would want to work for them is beyond me. They already have problems getting big name free agents to go there.

Remember Fred hasn't said a thing. He's a top 3 name in coaching search circles right now. Likely he hasn't contacted anyone. His name is just out there for everyone to pick up on. Just because reports are that so and so is interested in Fred, doesn't mean he has the least interest in them.

umm lolno....

Yes, he is a coach on the rise but lets not pretend that Fred is a world beater. He is a good coach who has yet to make it past the sweet 16, or even win a regular season title. Definitely not a top 3 coach.

I don't think that's entirely true. The Bulls are trying their damnedest to get something of value for Thibs. My assumption is they already talked to Fred and he's lined up and ready to take the job. So now that the Bulls have that part of the deal handled they can take their time in making sure they at least get something for Thibs. In the mean time official news has come to a complete stop because the Bulls can't announce Fred yet, and Fred can't really talk about it either. I'm assuming in the end if the Bulls can't get anything of worth for Thibs they will just cut and pay him and Fred will be brought in. This is why we are in silence mode right now. If Fred was going to turn them down he would have done so and said something by now.

Did someone **** in your Wheaties this morning?

Yeah the only real leverage they have is from playing Orlando and New Orleans against each other, and if one of them hires a coach first, that goes away.

I just he'd look to Billy D for inspiration. The NBA is there today and it'll be there tomorrow and the next.

I think Minnesota and Chicago are legit threats to ISU and of interest to Fred. Just saying that I sincerely doubt he's shopping the entire league or is otherwise anxious to leave Ames. There's a difference between interest and listening. There's a bigger difference between "reports say" and fact. Really doubt New Orleans as a potential landing spot, and for the life of me can't see Orlando.

That being said - it'll probably happen.

Reports from the Chicago people are that they won't fire him because they don't want to pay him the full amount bc his contract says the Bulls owe him even if he coaches someone else after being fired. and that's like 9 mill or whatever it is.

Really? What 3 other coaches are being mentioned consistently in all these jobs?

I'm not saying he is staying, but he never said anything to squash rumors last year, and ended up not taking any NBA jobs. There's no doubt he's interested. That doesn't mean he is gone though. It also doesn't mean he wont be gone. Making any definitive statements at this point is pretty pointless as they are all guesses.

I think they were saying a top 3 candidate for an NBA job, which he is judging by nearly every team with an opening or potential opening being interested. The NBA doesn't care how many things you had in CBB, that goes for players and coaches.

Yep, no question. I can't believe I'm even saying this, but *gulp* even Calipari came out and gave a blanket statement this week to rub out any thought of him leaving. Excuse me while I go wretch a little for invoking his name.

I don't think anyone is naive enough to believe that Hoiberg wouldn't at least entertain the idea. I'm sure he's listening to whatever teams are telling him. But that doesn't mean he's going to leave. Maybe he's not made a decision either way. Not that that possibility would settle anyone's stomachs around here, but I've yet to see anything that suggests this is an all-but-done deal. Lots of conjecture around here and in the media.

There's got to be more to it. 9 million isn't squat for an NBA organization.

I've noticed that the media people, including our own CF people, are being VERY careful as to the words they are using with this situation. No one wants to be the one to say "he's gone" and then Fred ends up staying.

Except that the Bulls are notoriously cheap. They didn't want to pay Butler last year in negotiations and now they will be forced to pay him even more if they want to keep him. They are just stupid

That's not because their trying to hide anything but rather their too scared to grow a pair and be the first one to let the cat out of the bag. Their assuming the Bulls job will open at which point Fred will take the job but also at the same time understand there's still a very small chance that it wont open for some odd reason and he'll remain at ISU. Their dipping their hands in the cookie jar but their too scared to take a cookie because Grandma's right around the corner.

Everyone can see and smell the smoke, but everyone is very careful about yelling "fire".

Yeah, I know. I want Fred to stay as much as anyone, but many talk as if we've been to 3 straight Final Fours and are getting Top 10 recruiting classes every year.

The disappointing thing is the distinct feeling the best was yet to come. Fred is the best coach we've ever had, but on court success hasn't actually separated him from some previous coaches.

That's where I'm at. Just doesn't feel like he accomplished what he could accomplish here.
