I mean.. it would be pretty dumb for him not to take the Chicago job for a few of reasons:
1. Location: as far as keeping in relatively close proximity to Ames and his family, Chicago and Minnesota are really the only options in the NBA
2. Roster: Their roster is structured really nicely from a contract standpoint
- Jimmy Butler (RFA '15): Bird rights on Butler so he'll be there for the next 4 years at least
- Derrick Rose and Taj (UFA '17): Both locked in for the next 2 years
- Pau Gasol (PO '16): Locked in next year, will probably want more money when the cap goes up in 2016 unless he retires
- Tony Snell and Mirotic (RFA '17): Can keep them for the foreseeable future
- Joakim Noah (UFA '16): He's pretty much done at this point Thibs ran him into the ground. Will open cap space in 2016
- Dunleavy (UFA '15): He's probably gone this offseason
- McDermott (TO the next 2 years, RFA '18): I'm sure Hoiberg would be able to use him offensively
They also have Sacramento's first round pick in 2016 top 10 protected if i remember right
3. Market: Just behind New York and Los Angeles as far as market size + basketball revenue potential
4. Demand: There just aren't many good veteran coaches out there right now. With guys like Coach K, Izzo, and Ollie staying in college ball and Donovan gone already Fred is really one of the only realistic options for the Bulls. They're not going to want to hire somebody like Monty Williams or Mark Jackson who are clearly downgrades from Thibs.
Really the only reason I can think of for him not making the jump would be if the Chicago front office low-balls him or doesn't give him the freedom to hire whoever he wants. Other than that this would be the perfect situation for him to make the jump especially since he already got his heart surgery done.

He only talks "openly" when he has an agenda. I think he was either trying to stir up fan pressure on Hoiberg to make a decision or just trying to preempt having to spend any more money on Hoiberg.

Folks are rightly concerned about the possibility as we get closer to a decision point. Blum put up some rational points on why he may go now and if going is inevitable in the near future (a big if) then now may be better than after this year. People look for smoke signals and many were hoping the smoke would signal staying more than going.
I just don't think they are in meltdown mode.

This. Meltdown mode is complete sky is falling irrational conclusions etc. A few have made irrational conclusions about what Fred leaving would mean but those people have been doing that for months.

Unless they are lying (possible), I think no one on the team knows what Fred will do. Or at least they didn't last year...and they said so publicly.

Someone said something along the lines of if ISU doesn't make the tournament in the next few years that Fred's desirability would go down. Take a look at Billy Donovan, he peaked years ago and has been on the decline ever since and yet still got hired to the NBA.
Personally, I think he has unfinished business here.

Completely disagree. Fred has a top 10-15 contract. And ONE Sweet 16 appearance to show for it. I love Fred and the momentum we have with the program but he is already paid pretty well.
What do you think he should be paid?

This is what I don't get. They are running out of town the most successful coach they've had since Phil Jackson. DRose is, at best, 50/50 as to weather or not he'll be playing a full Season. A lot of the team is getting up there in age. This year seemed the me the Bulls best shot at getting a championship. The Bulls job is far from the disaster it was when Floyd took over, but it is starting to have an eerily similar feel to "Time to rebuild"
And again the front office issues. Would you really want to take over any team knowing that if your philosophy doesn't match up with the office, you are likely gone.
I honestly wish Fred all the best in anything he wants to do, it's one of the reasons I really hope he doesn't take the Bulls job. I really don't think it will work out well.
