Official 2015 Hoiberg NBA Speculation Thread

The Bulls have long been linked Iowa head coach Fred Hoiberg. However, sources near that situation say Hoiberg, who’s been dealing with heart related issues and had another heart procedure last month, may not be looking to jump to the NBA and the stress level associated with it. If the Bulls do part ways with Thibodeau, it’s unclear who they would target as his replacement. Sources peg Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry as a serious front runner. Basketball Insiders

Completely disagree. While the talent is here this there, if the new coach fails with that talent we will all be wondering what if Fred had stayed. I would rather have that final four run then deal with the difficult turnaround under a new coach the next year then underachieve with a great roster and inexperienced coach and have only a slightly less difficult turnaround.

If Fred leaves this summer, does Niang, McKay, et al. all magically gain 2 more years of eligibility? No.
As of right now, 2016 will be a rebuilding year regardless of what coach is here.
I would rather have Fred coach next year and take us deep and then bolt for the NBA, than have him leave now and ISU take their chances on a new coach with a talented roster. At least we know what we're getting with Fred.
ISU is nowhere near a stable enough program to reload year after year.

To further add, there's no guarantee ISU's loaded team will return for a new coach, even TJ. They could transfer away and leave ISU in a worse position. It would be better for ISU for Fred to stay and make an Elite Eight/Final Four rather than bolt before that happening.

I don't get why we, as Iowa State fans, are freaking out about this. It's been 5 years now. We go through this every offseason. He goes, he goes. He stays, he stays. We can't do anything about it, so why analyze is?

Well said. Until someone catches Fred at the airport on a plane to Chicago and Thibs has already been let go, I'm not going to worry.

I just don't see the appeal to going to the NBA. I know he has said it is a goal of his, but it just doesn't seem like a great idea to me. The NBA just chews up and spits out coaches. I think trying to envision where CFH would be in 5 years it seems like he is more likely to be in a good spot staying in Ames.

Five years later, still in Ames: Fanbase is arguing about how much more he needs to do before we name the court after him, or whether his ISU legacy will be bigger as a player or a coach.

Five years later after heading to the NBA: NBA fanbase is debating who his replacement will be after he is fired from his NBA gig (for the second time by this point). A portion of the ISU fanbase views his ISU legacy as tainted due to whatever the circumstances were around his departure.

I'd rather raise my family in Ames instead of bouncing from job to job in the league, and I think the best way to build up a legacy as a coach is to stay put at a school ala Izzo or Coach K.

Yep. If Fred takes us to the Final 4 next season, he can leave and every player could transfer away and I'd still be happy. However, if he bolts on his best team yet, the "what if" factor will be off the wall.

So easy for any of us peons to say.

Guys don't go the coach in the NBA because they are afraid of getting fired. All NBA head coaches are extremely competitive and are trying to win. You don't go into a job with the mindset "Hopefully I can last longer than 2 years"

Get to coach the best players in the world, get to go up against the best players and coaches in the world, get to spend a lot more time on just basketball, all the recruiting and booster obligations go away.

Unless Otz wins a National Title, then it will all be about how Otzball in a slight tweaking of Hoiball brought the Cyclones to the promise land

Actually it is new. I believe Pollard to date has said "if he has the NBA itch, he will someday scratch it" and not "From Day 1 Fred said he wants to be in the NBA".

I'll stand by my prediction: If the Bulls job opens this summer and Hoiberg doesn't take it...he will never leave ISU for another job, coaching or front office or AD or otherwise.
