Nick Noskowiak

Because we weren't even recruiting him at that point!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were 2 months between his release and when we got back involved. What about that timeframe?
Likely several reasons.
Teams don't take risks on guys like Noskowiak as readily two months ago including us with MA. High demand guys with uncertainty around offcourt things tend to have little on court uncertainly. That was not Noskowiak.
Enter TJ and us with fewer other options, plus Noskowiak clearing up some of the offcourt issues, and it makes sense we are now willing to take a risk on him. Other teams may be able to be more selective, and ones that aren't may feel that they don't have a good enough chance for it to be worth it.

I am hopeful he is not another Custer.

Cal, Minnesota,VT were all in the mix after his release, not sure what happened in between then and when NN narrowed it down to USC and ISU so let's not act like ISU was the only team trying to get NN.

That's what I mean. The only reporting on Noskowiak from Feb 16th to April 9th that I can find is these two tweets:

Jeff Borzello@jeffborzello Feb 16
Ex-Marquette signee Nick Noskowiak said Georgia, Auburn, Cal, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, UNLV have reached out to his AAU coach.

Jeff Borzello@jeffborzello Apr 9
Former Marquette signee Nick Noskowiak confirms he's down to Iowa State and USC. Decision by the end of the month. No. 73 in ESPN 100.

So initial contact, but no followup. No visits that I can find. None of those teams listed seemed to do anything but have that initial contact.

Of course that had an influence on our interest, but why did nobody have interest before?

And even before Custer was leaving, are we really going to turn down a top 80 G because of Clayton Custer?

Woodbury was Top 50. Why didn't we recruit him? He was Top 50 for crying out loud! Your argument is pointless.

Custer was also a 4 star recruit and was expected to develop into the next point guard. He basically transferred due to bad timing (didn't want to waste another year sitting on the bench next year). I don't think Custer is an awful player like you may think he is.

I think its useful to look at the comments that TJ made about Jameel and Deonte when looking at why the NN recruitment is so "easy" as Rhoadhoused but it; he's known them forever. I think it is safe to say it's the same way with NN. The guy is all about relationships and not burning them, he's probably been in contact with NN since he was in junior high. With this short of a recruitment period for NN after de-committing from Marquette it stands to reason that the length of the reataionship and the familiarity between NN and TJ is what is making this so "easy". Then of course there is also the proximity and big Wisconsin connections that this team already has.

As badly as some people want there to be JFK levels of conspiracy and clouds of mystery around every situation the bottom line is that kids want to come to ISU and a lot of people are having a hard time getting used to that.

I think we would've taken him if we had literally no competition. Pretty sure he told us no very early on in the process. Luckily he has not developed one bit since high school.

Does a player have to be awful for you to not turn down a top 80 player in the country?

No matter what you think of his potential, you can't justify not recruiting a player that talented because of a kid who essentially didn't play his freshman year.

And I think his transfer destination probably tells a bit about his talent perceived talent level. But I'm sure he could've developed into a solid player. I've got nothing against him or NN.

He didn't have depression, his dad released that statement and he corrected it and said he had an abusive father and needed to get out of that household. He said that in the release about him not going to Marquette in February.

That's why I said rumored. Either way, it didn't help his recruiting situation. I have no problems even if he was depressed. We've dealt successfully with players with personal problems in the past anyway.

maybe he told them no. You don't know anything about his recruitment and you aren't going to figure it out in this thread, no matter how many times you ask.

It is perfectly reasonable and not that hard to figure out why we are interested in him now. That is the easy part.

My questions are why weren't we interested before, and why wasn't anyone else ever interested?

When he first decommitted form Marquette he was a top 60 ranked player, and we didn't even bother to try recruiting him. When he got out of his LOI, we didn't bother to recruit him.

I find it hard to believe Hoiberg was turning him away without some other reason, but he doesn't seem that risky. And I find it hard to believe almost no other schools in the country were willing to take that risk as well.

Of course. My point is that it shouldn't be an ongoing problem, so there really shouldn't be much risk associated with recruiting him.

Why is this kid telling all 8 of those schools no and then only having a USC offer 2 months later?

how drunk are you tonight? you have like 5 comments in a row.

Exactly we can speculate all we want but there is not going to be a solution, let's all enjoy our Friday night and worry about NN on Sunday after his breakfast at the Hoibergs.

No, but having a kid who didn't play his freshman year would make you apprehensive to take a similar pg the next year.
I think NN is a better prospect than Custer, but imo passing made more sense when we already had a similar prospect/risk on scholarship from the prior class. With Custer gone, there is room for acquiring that type of asset.

I should probably crack one after reading some of these replies.

People are really really opposed to suggesting Hoibeg may not be 100% perfect.

And whether I say NN wasn't that big of a risk and was talented or I say maybe he's not as good as everyone is saying, I catch **** from both sides.

Why would you recruit a point guard over Custer when a) there were only 2 known open scholarships that would be available at the time and b) Custer was ranked in the 90s, so why would you fill a scholarship with 2 players that similar when there are other needs? I think you're looking into this WAAAY too much. It's all about timing, fit, and needs when it comes to recruiting.

Your biggest problem is that you're stating a lot of stuff as fact, when in reality you know about 2% of what has gone on with his recruiting. Maybe some day you'll find your answer. Good luck on your impossible journey.

I don't see them as all that similar honestly. Custer is 3 inches shorter and was more of a pure PG in college. Noskiowiak is more of a combo and I would guess he at least starts his career off with a lot of 3 point shooting.

After his initial decommit I can see why he wouldn't be interested in ISU, but this February it makes less sense.

Good to have someone actually bring up some salient points though without pretending I'm burying the kid to prop up your own argument.

DO YOU NOT REALIZE THAT WE HAD ENOUGH GUARDS UNTIL CUSTER TRANSFERRED?
