Bowl or Bust

I'd rather win 0 games this season and CPR get canned then win 2 or 3 games this year. Ideally we would win every game though.

Agreed. Winning 1-3 games this season will be as depressing as winning 0. Having the tenant, in this nice new stadium, win only 1-3 games will just be a kick to the nuts to Cyclonenation.

How do you get that my opinions are meant to stop people from buying tickets? I bought tickets myself.

Let me try to say it yet again. There are no benefits for the team for us being either positive or negative with our opinion of the season that we post here. Your positivity doesn't have benefits and my negativity doesn't have benefits, although I personally don't feel I'm being negative to say that I don't think we win many games, just realistic.

I get your game now. You're a scalper. You bought tickets, and discouraging other people from buying tickets opens up more opportunities for you to cash in.

Winning 0 games is much, much worse.

Not even going to play this bizarre little game with you. There has been absolutely nothing to indicate the ability to get an 8- or 9- win season under this head coach. If it happens, I'll be amazed.

Let's say the 9 win season never happens. Maybe not even the 8 wins. Would you fire CPR if he consistently wins around 6-7 wins per season?

See that's the thing. I wasn't even being negative in the post that caused Stormin to lose it. All I said was I believe it would be wise to take a wait and see approach before getting all giddy about articles or podcasts released in the offseason. This is the same thing that happens every single season. It's called MARKETING.

You're either smart enough to see through it, dumb enough to believe it all, or wise enough to sit back and say "You know what... I enjoy reading this stuff and following my team, but I've been dumb enough in the past to believe everything that was said in the offseason only to be shocked at how bad the team was in the actual season. I'm not letting that happen again!".

Don't be that guy. That's all I'm saying Stormin. I'm not saying you have to be negative. I'm just saying every single year Chris, CPR, JP, and former players come out and say things positive about the program and about certain players. In the end that doesn't mean crap if they don't produce results. The fact of the matter is they haven't produced results for quite some time. I'm not even encouraging negativity. I'm encouraging people to take a cautious approach to what could very well end up being another poor season.

There's no need to buy into the hype until the team lives up to it. Honestly, I bet the players and coaches would think the fans are pretty stupid if they were nothing but positive right now. What the hell have they done to be positive about? They know they need to produce results. They know the fans deserve that. If they take something personal that a random fan says on the internet then shame on them. They probably should not be playing at this level then. I get critiqued in my job. You probably get critiqued in yours. That's life. If you aren't performing up to expectations then you better be ready to handle the criticism.

As a Hawkeye, you would love for ticket sales to drop, and have Cyclone fans to not support the program.

So it is fair to point out that you do have an agenda with your posts. You want Cyclone Football to fail. You want to discourage fans from supporting the team and buying tickets.

We have assembled some decent young talent and have some decent prospects for the coming year. As a Cyclone Fan, I am well aware that being optimistic and having reasonable expectations like 4-6 wins in this coming year might result in a kick to my nuts. But being a Cyclone Fan, I am used to that.

Using your logic, Cyclone fans should not buy into the hype of our BB team being a Top 10 program next year. We just got kicked in the nuts by freaking UAB for goodness sakes. But Cyclone fans, get up from the ground and scrape themselves off and get optimistic for the coming season.

There is only 1 college team that I will support.....win or lose. And that is Iowa State. It is not about the "return on investment" and other such BS. It is about a love for Iowa State and its athletic teams. My support for the team is not based "what have they done recently" and "they must win". If that were the case, then I would become an Alabama fan or maybe an Ohio State fan or an Oregon fan. But I am an Iowa State fan.......only an Iowa State fan.

If I based my support to "on the field results" then I never would have been an Iowa State fan. HOW could someone cheer and support a team that has not even won a Conference Football title since 1913.....the old MVIAA, over a hundred years ago. True Cyclone fans understand that. The True Cyclone fans understand where we have been and from what we have come from. And the True Cyclone fans get up from their all too frequent kick in the nuts and support the team. No matter what. Because that is what we do.

Jamie Pollard is our Athletic Director. IF Jamie Pollard makes a decision concerning our Athletic Department then I will support that decision. IF Jamie Pollard is replaced by the Iowa State Administration then I will support that decision.

My level of Cyclone Fan Support is Unconditional.......Loyal Sons Forever True, We Will Fight the Battle Through.

Just so you understand. Donations to the ISU Foundation does not support the ISU Athletic Department. And neither do donations to the Alumni Association.
.

You are not entirely right there. I do ALL of my ISU giving via the ISU Foundation and than select the amounts that go to specifics. You can give to the general scholarship fund, let them decide or pick from a long drop down list that includes the Cyclone Club and an athletic bldgs renovation fund. This year I gave money to the Cyclone Club, the Alumni Association, the College of Design and Reiman Gardens. Just a matter of click, click, click. Of course I hear back from all of the groups but do not donate to them in separate actions, just way to easy to login in once and than get one nice ISU Foundation receipt for it all.

Gift Designations

Choose the area of Iowa State that you'd like to support
o ISU General Scholarships
o Area of Greatest Need (Greater University Fund)

o I want to choose where my gift is designated

Athletics

  • Athletic Facility Renovation Fund
  • Cyclone Club Fund

And yes, I know by your definition I am not a "True Fan" because even as an Order of the Knoll level donor I suck because ALL of my donation did not go to the Athletic Department.

Wow. I applaud you for your loyalty. I will say I don't agree with your definition of a True Fan. Not all fans are just blindly loyal like you are. If that were the case then changes would never be made because stadiums across the country would be sold out regardless how poor the team has been. No one would complain. Just because someone demands a better product doesn't mean their heart is in the wrong place. It just means they want to see their team improve. There's nothing wrong with that.

This is how we give as well. There are several reasons why.

Nothing quite like blind loyalty. I suppose in a way it would be nice to be like you and just be happy when things are bad, I'm sure you were happy during the McDermott years just like you were happy with how Chizik was doing. But I think overall I'd like to continue to be a fan and push for bigger and better things even if it means having to not be positive all the time and made a fuss when things aren't going well to try to get things to change for the better.

By the way Stormin... It sounds like you are predicting 5 wins for ISU this year. I would predict 4 at this time. Look at the bright side, we aren't near as far off in our predictions as we were last year at this time!

Right now I would have ISU beating UNI, KU, and Toledo. Then one of the following: Iowa, TT, or OSU.

Well said. I've been a season ticket holder for over 40 years and plan to always be one. I go into every year with some optimism, but also there is the reality that when things haven't been going well for awhile, the team and staff need to prove something before I'll get too high on the pre-season hype. That's where I'm at this year. But I'm an alum and longtime season ticketholder, as I suspect Stormin is. We're always going to be there, but the program depends on a lot of fans that aren't alums and die hards, and the coaches and team have to perform to get those people in the stadium. A coach has to prove he can get the job done to earn the support of the die hards and non die hards alike. I think everybody knows CPR is at that point and Ferentz probably is too.

LOL. For 19 consecutive losing seasons, the Hawkeyes had fairly good fan support. Coaches were fired occasionally but generally after at least 5 seasons of losing records....unless you are Frank Lauterbur, who was winless in his 3rd season. They generally averaged around 50,000 fans in a stadium that held 60,000 during that nearly 2 decade long losing seasons streak.

I am sure you are beating your drum telling Hawkeye fans to stay away from Kinnick today. LOL.

IMO, a True Fan supports their team......in good times and bad. Fans that only give their support when the team is winning is called a "bandwagon fan".

Like the Cyclone Fight Song says: "Loyal Sons Forever True. And We Will Fight The Battle Through."

No. I would fire him when the fans get tired of 6-7 win seasons and stop showing up, though. It's happened before.

We will beat Iowa. Have you looked at their Depth Chart? Really weak lineup. And automatically assuming CJB is going to be great is really gulping down the kool-aid. Plus the game is at Jack Trice. I actually think we have a possibility of winning all 6 of those games.

I say let's beat an FCS team on our home field before we automatically tick the W box next to a P5 team.

Kind of like Iowa did when they fired Dr. Tom Davis, because they were tired of making the NCAA's every year but not getting to the Elite 8 or Final Four?

I have NEVER seen Iowa State fans get tired of 6 and 7 win seasons and stop showing up. WHEN did that happen?
