My point was that I don't think this news is particularly bad for ISU, and I agree that we have the superior team coming back.
Hopefully this leads to scholarship losses and post season bans. That'll tilt things in our favor.
Don't lose any sleep waiting for that to happen to the squawks. Their history is littered with stuff like this and nothing every comes of it.
What recruiting violations do you think Kansas was guilty of that they need to be punished for? Frankly I think this whole thing is absurd that the ncaa regulates that the parents of a recruit cannot take out a loan from an established finance company based on future earnings until after the kid declares for the draft. How is this different from a student loan where the student takes out a loan for school and is not expected to begin paying it back until after they graduate and begin earning their future earnings? If these people want to take out a bad loan with a legit company that's on them. Like the majority of dumb people that take out loans they may not be capable of repaying, they should simply have to deal with the legal impacts of their stupidity and impatience. It's too bad for Cliff and for Kansas that he is the child of stupid parents that couldn't wait to cash in on their child. This could have all been avoided by one simple phone call to either the KU or ncaa compliance department to determine if this was an option and if so, when. They cannot have thought they were going to do this and not have it discovered when it requires you to fill out documentation that is publicly filed. This wasn't cash in a brown bag behind the gas station. Can't fix stupid, I suppose. Oh, well. Chalk one up in the "live and learn" department and move on. Cliff will get replaced in recruiting with a player that won't have a tough time providing more than what Cliff gave us and Kansas will be better off next year for it. Glad KU has an answer so that they don't have to play holding out hope that they might have him back. Now they can move forward and Lucas and Mickelson know for certain they will be counted on to produce.
If you allow families to take out loans based on "future earnings" of their kid, it opens up a whole can of worms.
What if a UK loan officer/booster offered a recruit a 2% interest rate loan for 500k, no payments required for 3 years? Then North Carolina loan officer/booster came back with a no interest loan offer for 600k... etc.
You could essentially have a bidding war based on proposed loan deals.
The colleges provide the parents with information on what they can and can't do. She knew she couldn't take out that loan and chose to do it anyway. Maybe she thought she wouldn't get caught. Some people think at different levels.

This is a thread with 125+ posts on a KU player. Seems like there wasn't a problem at all finding KU discussion.
You assume the colleges provide that information to the parents. That's the potential for KU to be on the hook for sanctions if they didn't do their job in the compliance department. If KU didn't notify the parents of what they can and can't do, it may be in KU's best interest for Cliff to declare and go away quietly.

Every athlete at every school gets this information as well as explicit instructions to call if there are any questions. It's wishful thinking to think this might come back on Kansas. Their only mistake was believing they could overcome the lack of intelligence of Cliff and his family. There is no chance that Cliff will return to Kansas once his family took out that loan. He's gone.

Your argument might make sense if the loan didn't influence the kid to go to Ku over Michigan State or some other school. What seems to have happened here is that a Ku supporter floated the loan based on Alexander switching to Ku. That's a too obvious Quid pro quo. And if the tie is made, Ku and Self could finally be attached directly and punished accordingly for their recruiting violations.

KU isn't affected by Cliff's parents talking to the ncaa. Odds are that the dollar amount was large enough that he wouldn't be able to come back by the end of the year anyways so there really isn't any reason at all for them to answer questions if their plan is for Cliff to go to the draft anyways. They thought Cliff was on the fast track and never imagined that he would struggle to understand the playbook and his assignments as much as he did. Another family that believed their high school hype too much.
