Update on DeAndre Kane

Good find

I hope he gets his shot in the NBA. I really think he has the skillset. And he seems to have the right mindset about it all.

Though if NBA Europe is his ceiling, he'll get enough memories and stores to last a lifetime.

I wonder when they play? I was in Belgium last fall and went right by Anthrop. Would have loved to stop and watch a game.

I obviously do not have whatever it takes to be an NBA scout, because I thought (and still do) that both DeAndre and Melvin would be very worthwhile NBA players.

The whole "better to be an undrafted free agent than second round draft pick trying to make a team" is nonsense wishful thinking that people say.

There are and have been lots of worse guards than DK in the league, it's not just 'potential' it's also that GMs have their ego tied up in all their draft picks, second round as much as first. A GM generally wants to give his picks a chance to succeed where he'll toss an undrafted free agent or d leaguer to the wind if it's not an instant success.

My guess is that if DeAndre and Melvin would have wanted to, they could have played in the D-League and I would bet that they would both be playing for an NBA team at some point this year, at least for 10 day contracts. However, that is a risk as they can both get more guarenteed money in Europe. Doing that, they lose the ability to come back to the NBA mid-season.

There is a reason GMs drafted players in the 2nd round over players that went undrafted. They've done the scouting and believe they have the best guy for them. I don't think a few summer games necessarily change that. You say its ego, but its more just trusting the original scouting.

Yep D-League salaries are around $25,000-$30,000 a year, that article says DeAndre is making low five figures a month, that's a big salary difference for the chance of possibly getting a 10 day contract.

Ejim was never more than a very long shot. Kane was a lot closer, IMO.

Ejim was effective as a college 3/4 because he's a tweener, but he doesn't have the handles needed to play the 3 in the NBA, and certainly too small to play the 4.

I was always more confident in Kane simply because his body wasn't going to be the thing that stopped him from playing in the NBA.

Great to hear that update one what happened in Russia, when the news broke it was just like...he's no longer with the team and no idea what happened. Guy was obviously one of the ten best college basketball players in the nation a year ago so good he's playing at a high level with good competition still.

The first year it's trusting that scouting. The second, and especially third or even fourth it's ego. Believe me as an NBA fan...even the good GMs have some 'wtf is this guy still doing on an NBA roster' moments while guys like Kane go without a shot.

Melvin just doesn't have the size he needed, but I'm still shocked DeAndre didn't make a roster somewhere.

But the kind of person he is, he's the kind of guy a euro team would want to lock up for a long career to provide stability...especially since he became a great clutch 3 point shooter later in his career. I think Ejim will have to decide how long he wants to play in Europe vs pursuing other things in life from listening to interviews with him.

Spending a decent amount of time in Spain and more in Italy...the passion for basketball isn't NCAA or NBA level, but it's a sport people do follow and do like to see games. Especially the more popular teams which are actually linked to the soccer clubs sometimes. I'd freaking love to have a 10-12 year basketball career in either of those countries for a lot less than most of them make there.

It's also the matter of limited roster spots and guaranteed contracts. If you have 15 guys under contract, there's not a lot of incentive to release someone, while still paying their full salary, and take a shot on a free agent when he may only be slightly better. The NBA - D-League relationship is still a bit of a mess at this point. I would bet there's major changes made in the next few years and the league moves entirely to a one D-League team for each NBA team model and some version of expanded rosters with spots for developmental prospects. The Josh Huestis situation this year and Pierre Jackson last year point out some of the flaws in the system right now.

Matt Abdelmassih hinted at this sort of BS going on CF radio. I was so naive, I actually thought the NBA's goal was to draft/acquire the best players and win. Just another reason for CFH to stay at ISU.

Niang is in no way shape or form an NBA player.

Lakers (im a lakers fan and big Kane fan) made the right decision in cutting him. Some guys are good college players and bad NBA players. Just the way it is. Plus outside of the top 8 guys on an NBA team, everyone else is pretty equal. The d league and oversees is chocked full of players just as good as the guys sitting at the end of an NBA bench.

I know I'm a few time zones back, but when did the Lakers pick up Niang?!?!

Dude, you are 25 years old. And it takes living in another country for you to get yourself up, cook your own meals, get somewhere on time?

“Living on your own in another country, you have to grow up,” Kane said. “You have to become a man really quick because you have a lot of responsibilities. You’re here by yourself. You’ve got to cook, you’ve got to wake yourself up for practice, and you’ve got to get to practice on time. You’re by yourself. It’s not college any more.
