The soft bigotry of low expectations.

If you expect little you will receive little. There are many posters who feel we are expecting too much from this team. The expectations are just too high. They don't want to hear about poor defense, poor free throw shooting, careless turnovers, and lack of rebounding. No criticism allowed. This team just isn't that talented, don't you know?

Well I'm sorry, but this team does have talent and my expectations are great. I am sure Fred is with me on this. We are not the Iowa Hawkeyes. We are not happy to lose a play-in game, say we made the tournament, and woohoo what a great year. Fred made that possible.

So while a few may have given up on the season, most criticisms are valid. And most who are pointing out those criticisms just want us to improve so that we can do great in the NCAA tournament. And most of those pointing this out also know you just don't push a button come tournament time and everything will be ok. Now is the time to get these things straightened out.

We can be great...but there is work to do. I expect it will get done.

It isn't that some criticism isn't allowed, but that the constant griping, whining and bickering is just old.
This site is nearly unbearable with all the negativity.

And mostly, for me, the personal attacks on the character of our student athletes and coaches (calling them "lazy", "selfish", etc).

As I said in another thread:

Having high expectations isn't a bad thing
Not handling when high expectations aren't met is a bad thing.

Maybe if we all chip in and just post "We're gonna win" 25000000000000 times it will happen. Reminds me of the "acceptance" retardetry that happens with the football team with posts like, "You're just accepting we're terrible so you're the reason why we're terrible! "...what does that even mean?

Are you "not accepting" it because you're telling me I'm "accepting" it? But anyway, I digest, carry on with thinking that any of this means anything to this team's bottom line.

Agreed. And it isn't low expectations either. There's a huge difference between low expectations and REALISTIC expectations. Too many fans are black and white in their viewpoints. This team has weaknesses, some of which are not immediately fixable given our current roster. For example, we are vastly undersized night in and night out. This makes a gigantic impact on how we can execute defensively; case in point, there's a reason Rico Gathers can impose his physicality on us down low, he's a beast compared to our undersized bigs. Knowing what our players can do and what they cannot do is NOT exacting a low expectation. It's called reality. Expecting my kid to make the Major Leagues isn't going to offset the limitations he might have, regardless of how hard he works to improve. Or the bit of luck it may take as well.

Are there areas that this team can improve on? Of course, there's always room for improvement. That's not the question. The question is realistically how much improvement is possible. This team is talented. This team does some things exceptionally well. Some of us believe that ceiling isn't nearly as high as others, and that belief is based upon reality.

The only problem is that fans can do nothing about this. I expect that the coaches and players aren't satisfied. But, as a fan, I don't think that I have to be unsatisfied with the results. I think the key is that we aren't coaching or playing. We should probably leave the coaching and playing to the people that actually are qualified to do it. Hint...that's not you and that's not me. Especially when we have a coach who has proven to be very good at his job.

WE ARE NOT MEMBERS OF THE TEAM.

Your expectations impact this team?

I agree somewhat with the bickering stuff. But to me having low expectations for this group is way more "negative" towards these athletes then pointing out their shortcomings. You know who never gets criticized? Those who no one cares about or those who have been given up on.

Totally agree with Bawbie. This team is not selfish, lazy, not working hard, etc. They just play poorly on the road. Attacking the work ethic of this team is crazy.

That is a overused and tired take on ISU basketball.

Well if expecting and accepting that we're going to lose some games through a season, maybe even ones we aren't supposed to, and in those games that we lose, we aren't going to play our best (SHOCKING TWIST I KNOW), and a player or players may have a poor or below average game in those losses is having low expectations then I'll admit I'm guilty.

I'm getting a major fairweather/band-wagon/hok football fan post-2002 vibe lately and I don't like that. Live and die with the team, not just live with them.

Exactly. That's what's funny about threads like this. It's like when someone starts a thread about a game later in the season and people rip on it, saying "we need to focus on the next game" and "we can't look past team XYZ first"... Yeah, you're a fan. What you say, think, feel, write, expect, and hope means nothing to and has no impact on the performance of your team.

Well let me tell you a little story about last night, I was sitting at home watching the game and Higgins was at the monitor and I yelled at my TV, "Give me a California hair flip Hollywood!" and he totally did it. Coincidence?

THE TEAM and THE COACH created the high expectations with Final Four talk preseason.

I think not. Maybe you're right. I spent half of this past football season screaming at Jake Rudock through my TV... "throw it into the ground blondie!" and that's exactly what he did.

And that's fine.

And I guess it is your right to be ****** off after every loss. But not every fan has to be that way. I'll be disappointed when we lose and happy when we win. And at the end of the season, I'll probably say that it was a pretty successful year.

I'm sorry, but I don't get this post. I know a lot of people like to throw around the "We expect better" but what exactly are you doing, personally, to deserve those expectations? Are you throwing money at the program? Donating money for a Hilton expansion? Hell, at least donating just enough that it hurts in the wallet just a little bit?

I'm not one to sit here and bash fans, but honestly whatever we "expect" doesn't matter at all. I can sit on my couch all day and be negative, positive, bitchy, a whiner, a crybaby or the most comoplimentary cyclone fan of all time. Guess what though, at the end of the day, it doesn't mean ****. Why? Because I have no real connection to the team other than going to school there.

As others have said, it's not that we don't understand the "fan expectations" it's the constant ******** and complaining that make it sound like we are Kentucky having an ISU Like season. I'm not quite sure what some fans know about ISU basketball, but in the history of ISU, making the NCAA tournament itself is still a relatively big deal, not necessarily the norm. If we get in this year, this will be the first time ever, ever in the history of ISU basketball that we've made the tournament 4 years in a row.

I think this is my biggest gripe about all of it. Trying to sit back and enjoy a resurgance in ISU basketball, like no other, but then when I come here all you read about is everything that's wrong with this team. It gets old and screams of spoiled little kids who didn't get their way.

I'm certainly not happy when ISU loses, but I can also put it into perspective and realize that just a handful of years ago, we were one of the worst power 5 teams around. Enjoy the fact that it's going to take a monumental collapse to not make the tournament this year, as opposed to a miracle to get in. We aren't entitled to anything. And most of all, stop acting like the players aren't trying to win. We play in a league full of good teams, sometimes, on that given night, the other team was just better.

The soft bigotry? Are we talking about a chat board that discusses college sports for the fun of it?

Not going to lie, after losses like last night its nice to get on here and relate with other people who are frustrated
