McKay Starting Over BDJ

Not surprised McKay is starting, but surprised it's over BDJ instead of Naz.

I wonder if Fred is thinking the starting lineup next year is Morris-Naz-Niang-McKay and then a 'we'll see' for that third big man or wing so might as well start gearing up for the next 1.5 seasons.

That's three returning players who could make a run for All Big 12 plus Naz who we know can single handedly shoot his way to some big Ws. I like the options we have for the fifth starter too.

I don't think Fred is worrying about next year right at the moment.

There is about a 0% chance that Fred is mixing up the lineup in February in order to prepare the team for next year

Bryce must've not had a great week of practice

With the way he's shooting I've been thinking why not go with this lineup as much as we can.

Outside of Naz and Niang (now that he snapped out of his slump) I'd just as soon have Hogue take a 3 as anybody.

Really? I think if it's a close decision to start Naz or BDJ, which it seems to me because both have different strengths and weaknesses, that a coach would consider which player has a year more of eligibility.

Preparing a team for next year and giving 100% for this year aren't mutually exclusive. Wasn't saying it was like a tanking team playing the underclassman for the future.

not a shock, seems odd to see him replace BDJ though. Based on how they've played I would've though Naz (love the guy but he's been really off lately) would sit but playing BDJ at the 2 and going big didn't work too great Monday night. I guess if its between Bryce, Hogue and Niang sitting, this is the most logical choice. I'm not sure I'd like BDJ off the bench as an offensive energy guy but you never know.

Dustin better fit at the 3

I think its more about McKay being our best 5 and Long being better at the 2 than Bryce. I can't see that there were any other candidates to come off the bench than Long and Bryce. If Naz can't get out of his shooting slump, he'll be the guy BDJ subs in for.

With Big 12 titles and a deep NCAA Tourney run at stake, I highly doubt Hoiberg is considering next year in terms of lineup - too much to play for this year. I would think Hoiberg tinkering with the lineup is to see what gives us a better chance to win this year. And with McKay's play, he's earned the right to start - and someone as a result has to sit.

So no, I don't think Hoiberg is thinking about next year as why McKay is starting over BDJ - he's thinking about what will give them the best chance to win this year.

If you're going to start your 5 best guys, then McKay HAS to start IMO. He's easily one of our top 5 guys.

And right now, I think Fred trusts Naz's outside shot and his defensive ability more than BDJ. I think Fred might be trying to send a bit of a message too. I think Fred wants BDJ to prove he deserves it again.

It's all about this team. We aren't Syracuse and staying at home in March. We're in 2nd in the conference and in position to have a good seed in the Big Dance. You don't even start thinking about preparation for next year. Fred thinks this move will help the team have more success this year.
