I was a bit surprised by the uncharacteristic apparent lack of knowledge of Tech personnel and lack of motivation coming into game. I have to assume those issues start at the top.

Tech had players on the court on this one that would not make the cut on most Power 5 teams, some of them had barely made the cut for Tech but were playing due to being shorthanded. ISU appeared to be unaware of this an never looked to take advantages of the mismatches. If checking out any film watch out for #1 who played the 5 for Tech for a good number of minutes. He is simply awful, so bad he actually fell over a few times without any help. He is also probably the slowest player I have seen ISU play against this season. There were few mismatch targeting attempts - it just seems the research wasn't done on this one.

ISU has had a history of similar struggles with less than stellar teams in the past few years and makes you wonder just how good these teams could be with an extra bit of mental toughness and focus.

Iowa State staff did not overlook Tech. They worked it hard all week. It is on the players. We looked like mud the first half. Looked like no one wanted to sweat. Tech was the better team today.

Yup. No "if we had made the FT's the game would have been a win" statements today. Tech got hot and Iowa State got sloppy.

Don't kid yourself.... we looked like crap for the first 37 mins out of 40.

Did you have a lot of opportunties to talk about the 'apparent lack of knowledge'? I'm not sure how you can know this unless you are on the team.

Loss is on both sides today. Players got to take responsibility and the coaches do.

According to the announcers on ESPNU, the staff was telling the players all week that if they didn't take TTU seriously enough, they could get upset.

We looked worse the first half by quite a bit, if you missed it. Lot of standing around. Outrebounded. Outwoirked. First half looked like our football team.

Exactly, there is no doubt that message would be passed along to players. ISU simply didn't seem to see the opportunities that existed on either side of the ball, that all other BIG12 opponents exploited thus far.

Not sure how you can defend the staff here. We have 3.5 years of good ISU teams coming out of the gates not simply flat but completely unprepared to compete. This has happened way too often.

TTU simply wanted it more, until about the last 6 minutes of the game when ISU damn well nearly almost came back to tie it amazingly enough. I think the team kind of gets discouraged easily either when their shots aren't falling or the other team is shooting lights out. There's been a few games not like that, but it seems like they need to improve their mental toughness.

The last 5 minutes of the game with the exception of a few things I'm happy with so at least they played with urgency big time.

McKay needs to start. I don't care who comes off bench. If they have a problem with that, then they aren't team players anyway

We were prepared, but didn't come out with any energy and lacked effort.

Agreed.

Play defense. Take it on the road.

Repeat.

...which would mean a lack of preparation for effort and energy.

Sort of important aspects of playing on the road.
