NFL: New England under investigation

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on...nvestigating-patriots-for-deflating-footballs

not sure much will come from this. Curious why the Patriots would even do this. They sure didn't need to.

Ehhh...kind of par for the course in NE. There was Spygate, and then last year some ex-Patriot players outed the team for doctoring (pun intended) their injury reports.

The Patriots always seem to have a stout team, so, like you say, it's curious why they resort to stuff like this.

I don't care if they were playing with a flat beach ball...Blount still would have rushed for 148 yards and 3 TDs.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the impact that had in the game was probably minimal. That being said, I wouldn't mind NE getting hammered for their continuous rule violations. They tend to treat the rule book as a list of suggestions.

Belicheck will always find some way to get an advantage, within the rules or otherwise. He's been exploiting the Tackle Eligible rules constantly lately. Even when he uses the rule correctly it's still in an attempt to get an advantage over the defense. If there's any confusion or miscommunication about who is eligible then NE gets an advantage. They got at least one flag last night for not re-declaring but it didn't matter in the end.

All in all, if NE exploits the rules but doesn't break them, they aren't wrong. But they are still *** holes.

Just like stop signs in a parking lot.

Is this a benefit or hinderance? Obviously for kicking, you want it pumped up as much as you can. I would think for throwing, especially in that weather, that a little softer ball would be nicer? Seems like an odd thing to do in an NFL game, as both teams share the balls. It's not like College where you use your own balls, is it?

I don't see it as exploiting .... the rules say you must declare, and if you don't you are penalized. And he was (as you noted). but it requires the defense to think about one more thing .... I hope he continues is during the SB (still rooting for Seattle). Its fun.

I'm sure it's all just a misunderstanding.

Doesn't surprise me with NE. They never fully go all out cheat-mode, but they bend the rules whenever they can.

That's one of those things that any OC or head coach should consider doing if they're thinking outside the box. It's not intramurals, there's a lot at stake, everything that is allowed by the rule book is fair game.

Now purposefully deflating balls, even though it obviously didn't affect the outcome of the bludgeoning they gave Indy, is not kosher and should be punished if it's found to be true.

Well at least one coach has complained because he didn't think NE was declaring properly or undeclaring on the next play.
They got at least one penalty for it last night where the player didn't change his declaration correctly after a play.

All in all, if they do it within the rules it's not cheating but it's shady as crap. They have a good enough team that they shouldn't have to stretch the rules to win but Belicheck will do that anyways. He will do anything to win, which is what makes him a winning coach. Doesn't mean anyone else has to like it though and I hope he gets slammed when he does break the rules.

I used to like the Patriots when Drew Bledsoe was the QB. Then Belicheck and Brady came on the scene and I've hated them ever since.

I want to know why a team is allowed to have access to the game balls during the course of the game. Why wouldn't they be held onto by an impartial party on the sideline? I get that kickers need balls to practice, and maybe backup QBs need to warm up, but can't they be given other balls, maybe marked "practice" or something like that? I just don't understand why a team would ever even have the opportunity to do this.

Harbaugh was just being a little *****. The replays I saw the Pats did everything right. Harbaugh was more upset with the fact that they went so quickly.

What the Pats have been doing is completely in the rules. The time they were flagged was a communication problem between players and coaches. I dont have a problem with what they were doing.

I don't see how you can call it shady if its within the rules. Its no more shady than a fake punt or fake field goal. Heck, if you're worried about deception within the rules, a fake handoff is shady.

Harbaugh was complaining because he thought the refs should have given the defense time to adjust. Maybe thats a rule change they need to make, but to me, that sounds more like sour grapes that he didn't think of it sooner.
