As long as both sides are equally locked in, this might work.
For a school like ISU, it most likely means that we don't see early commits, since anyone with any shot at a better offer would just hold out for those offers, leaving us either to snap up less talented players who don't have those options or be left with open roster spots.
Whatever you do, you don't level the playing field in recruiting without winning. Programs like ours that are not winning won't be getting advantages from any change to the system.
Because I don't think it is necessarily a double standard for fans to not like a player decommitting from Iowa State and then to be OK with getting a player from another program.
I don't think Devine is scum of the earth for doing what he did, but I also don't have to love him for doing it.
In the end, it is a fairly big loss that the people that are determined to be upset about the football program are going to use to continue to freak out about. But this class was always going to be small and quite frankly high school kids aren't exactly going to make or break this coaching staff. Hell, those that want rid of Rhoads should be upset he isn't coming here.

It would totally help a school like Iowa State. Kids probably aren't going to wait around if they are 'encouraged' to sign in an early signing period. They'll sign with Iowa State. That's why we get those commitments, because the kids want to cover their bases. If a school says we want you, but you've got to sign early, most of them will sign early.

An early signing period would prohibit contact from other schools as well which some seem to miss.
I'll say that it does get frustrating to put a lot of time into these kids and then have Texas (with Nickerson kid) or Nebraska come in at the last minute and get them.
It's slightly different with Campos because Iowa State was always in the picture with him.
I liked Pelini's idea of no signing period at all. Coaches can offer scholarships whenever they want and players can accept and sign right away. No such thing as a flipped commitment or a soft commitment.
It would add to the parity in the sport. Right now the big boys can swoop in late and get guys that some smaller schools have been in on longer. If both parties, player and coach, are willing to be locked in, then let them do it as early as they want. Maybe make a starting point of their junior year of high school or something so we don't get 13 year olds signing scholarship offers.

I like it....and maybe then give a player an out if a head coach leaves by February of their senior year.
100% agree, all players should be released from their commitment if the head coach leaves before they graduate high school or probably some date like June 1 or something.
Players should have as much freedom in this as possible. They are the ones with the value here that coaches are capitalizing to make millions, after all.
Maybe not. But this kid not signing with us has NOTHING to do with what happens with Rhoads next year. Not a damn thing.
If we start losing current players expected to play, it would increase Rhoads not returning next year (ala Coe and Irving) or if the jucos start getting hurt before setting foot on campus (Terry Ayeni) or if the jucos don't show up this summer. All of those things would increase the chance that Rhoads gets the boot.
A freshman running back that would likely have been redshirted not coming? Not affecting next year at all.
