Cloud Storage/Computer Back Up

Anyone have any experience with cloud storage, particularly anything with an auto back up feature (if that's possible)? My hard drive died, and despite the fact that we have five external/portable drives I'm afraid no one but me has been backing things up. Anyone have any experience with on service or another. I'd like to avoid this issue again if possible.

I use Carbonite. I have their basic plan, which is $60/year. It has already saved my ***** one time. The only drawback to my plan is I have to manually set home videos to backup, which can be a pain to remember to do, but I've kind of got it down to a routine to mark them for backup as soon as I save them. They have a more expensive plan that backs up home videos automatically but I can't see paying double (I think) what I'm paying now for something I can do with one mouse click.

It's pretty slick, operates completely in the background and the one time I did have a hard drive failure I had all my files back in a week or two. (Restore speed is adjustable. I didn't care how long it took so long as I got them back.)

I use to be obsessed with backing things up so when I built a new PC I would add an extra hard drive and then have Acronis do complete backups. I would also have Google drive constantly back up my music, video, and pictures.

I'm going to build another PC in a few months and I'll probably just continue to use Google drive and throw in additional hard drive to back up my important files. With everything being in the cloud these days, acronis probably overkill. If I had a hard drive failure (ssd) i'd probably just reinstall the OS.

I used to have Mozy and was happy with it until they went to a tiered plan which would have quadrupled the price for me since I have a lot of video and pictures. So I switched to Carbonite, which is unlimited data backup on their standard plan. So as long as you have everything on one computer you can back up as much as you want. Or at least, that's the way it was when I signed up. Like ruxCYtable you just have to manually mark your videos for backup. With everything else you can just designate certain folders to back up and anytime you add files to that folder it will automatically get it.

Same scenario as me. Loved Mozy until they increased their prices, then switched to Carbonite.

I personally think online storage is a waste of money and can take a long time to upload if you have a lot of stuff.

Go with the the Mycloud storage my Western Digital. I believe you can get the 2TB system that has another 2TB hard drive that mirrors the first hard drive for redundancy. This basically creates your personal cloud that you can access anywhere.

I personally have a 2TB external and a 500gig solid state that I travel with. Sold state hard drives are really dropping in price.

I agree with a lot of what you say but if you were to have a fire, you would lose everything without some kind of external cloud. Not everything needs to go to the cloud though.

You could always buy a 40ish dollar fire proof and water proof mini safe.

I use Dropbox. Works well, updates automatically across multiple devices.
