Merry Christmas, fanatics! Hoping you and yours have had a great holiday season so far.

I've been in the market for a new tablet/laptop for awhile, and have had my eye on the surface pros. I ended up getting a Surface Pro 3 tonight and I'm really loving it so far. I got the middle of the pack selection when it comes to ram and storage, but it seems like that will be plenty for me. I was just curious if any of you have one, and if you have any recommendations for getting started. Some under the radar apps that you've come across, tips and tricks with the machine itself that some might tend to miss, etc.

Thanks!

I haven't heard anything about, they should run more commercials.

Bought mine about 3 months ago because it would fit in the center console of my tundra. I love it and it has plenty of power. I also have a Lumia 1520 that I bought off craigslist when my android got stolen. I actually like the phone a lot as well. There are a few apps that I wish would come over...but not many.

Amazon has a small, secure bag that is perfect for it for $12 or so btw...it's an Amazon brand bag...great addition.

I had went over to the cult of apple for awhile and I still have IP5, mini mac, and 4 ipads, 2 ipods, and IP4S for wife. That said I got ****** about lack of memory expansion in IP and Ipad. I have to tell you my wife and I are both about to sell the mac mini for just a W8 pc because the mac is slow and imho not as good as my surface as far as general speed and usability.

Let us know what you think. And if you have any suggestions. I think I am going to get the i5/256 version. Just waiting to see if theres another good deal anythime soon.

We have a bunch of them at work. I love seeing people with them in meetings. Half of them have the laptop die in the first hour of the meeting. Meanwhile my macbook air can go the entire day without recharging.

Really enjoying it, though I'll really find out how much I enjoy it when I get back to Ames and actually work on it. I also don't have a type cover yet so that will make a huge difference. I sometimes find myself upset that the windows store is missing some apps I enjoy (chrome for instance) but then quickly realize I can just flip over to the normal computer screen and download it as a regular browser. I also haven't made the necessary downloads to use android apps yet, so I'll probably do that if I really end up missing certain things. For the time being though, I've loved the interface and it seems to be the perfect combo for me. The only thing I'm uncertain of is if I'll be able to record my music efficiently with my Presonus software and audio interface, but if that doesn't work well enough I'll just keep my old laptop specifically for that purpose.

I think it has good battery life...but you have to change some settings to maximize it. If you don't it's not bad but not huge.

That said I'm done with apple's BS about no expansion for memory which sucks when you've made an investment and realize you've miscalculated your needs or just plain run out.

Gee, I got an iPad Air 2 fo Christmas. Should I start a thread about it?

I'm really curious to your experience with the Surface... We're strictly a Mac family but these notebooks really have a great combination of features. Currently typing on my MacBook. Have an I-mac in the other room and of course the IPad and some random IPods around. Would love a smaller device that seamlessly runs the microsoft stuff I need for work to eliminate my need to carry the "real" laptop.

What other machines were you considering before getting the Surface?

Initially, I just intended to get a tablet. I looked in every direction, but was mainly looking into Samsung and Apple. I came across the surface because my brother had one for his job and loved it. I started considering the surface, whether it be the pro series or RT. Eventually I realized that I was past due for a laptop upgrade anyway, so I could essentially kill two birds with one stone with the Pro 3. As I said earlier, I won't really know how much I enjoy it until I start working with it in the spring semester, but I can't imagine I won't like it. I've always run windows, and with the entire windows experience being available, it should work great.

I've also really liked the layout of the tablet view. I know the new Windows gets a bad rap, but I've liked it thus far.

Now if you want cheap, try RCA tablet with keyboard:

These even sold for 50 bucks pre XMAS at walmart.com.
My wife got me the 16GB version of these for Christmas. Pretty solid tablet/computer, normal browsing, games run pretty fluidly, decent battery life, but it takes a while to charge. Nothing real special, but for normal browsing and app downloads, it's a good buy. Deleting all of the bloatware helps too.

I love some of the posts in here. Kind of goes to show:
Q: How do you know when someone uses an apple product?
A: Don't worry, they'll tell you.

Disclaimer: Typed on a monster of a Macbook pro: (I7, 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD running OSX Yosemite along with VM software Parallels to run Windows 7 Pro concurrently)

I like my windows machines for gaming / work / productivity, etc, and I would love to get a Surface Pro eventually.

I started a new job this week and was unhappy with the laptop they gave me. I went out and grabbed the "cheap" Surface Pro 3 i5/128GB and am in the process of setting it up. I saw the suggestion earlier in the thread about bluestacks for Android Apps. Does anyone else have any suggestions for must-haves when it comes to setting these up?
