Mangino to Pitt?

If you think TT is in a "Severe Downward Spiral"

What do you call what's happened to our football program the last few years?

We didn't really have a high starting point, so our downward spiral was less severe.

It's like TT is jumping off the 801 Grand tower, and ISU only started at the 3 story parking garage.

Hoiberg spent a year on the Timberwolves coaching staff and four years in their front office, learning how to scout talent, scout opponents, manage rosters, etc. Why is this so hard for people to understand? Sage has not had ANY of this experience. NONE. That is the difference.

NONE is a pretty strong word. Don't have a dog in this fight, but I am curious from a "devil's advocate" point of view. Would you place any value on his experience as a career backup on multiple NFL teams? Think of the meeting rooms he has sat in with some of the best NFL coaches (both head and assistant). For a lot of those years, Sage pretty much knew his chances of playing was nil. Is it possible he functioned in some of those settings as a de facto assistant coach? Did his backup status afford him the opportunity to watch and learn how some of the best professionals did their jobs? I'm not saying I have inside knowledge of what he did, but I am not going to to quickly dismiss a decade in the League as having no value. For all I know he's an ingnoramus and terrible with people. But maybe he isn't either.

Mangino thrived beating ****** teams. The only school he has a winning record against is Iowa State. He has a measly four wins against the B12 south, to his 20 losses.

The year he went to the Orange Bowl he played one team that had a winning record, and lost.

I'm not quick to praise Mangino like everyone else for beating up a pretty pathetic B12 North.

Um, all teams thrive on beating bad teams. That is nature of it. It's not an insult to say he beat the teams he was supposed to.

Let's see.....

They beat us with their 3rd string quarterback.

They had twice as many wins as us this year.

They had 8 wins last year.

They had 8 wins the previous year.

Would you be happy if we had an 8 win year? Or better yet were you even born the last time we had 8 wins?

So we are comparing dog poop to horse poop?

Since we're running with the hypotheticals...

Nothing against Sage (and I wouldn't be totally opposed to taking a leap with him if Mangino left us high and dry), but why would you take the leap with him at OC as opposed to a former Cyclone who actually has relevant coaching experience like Austin Flynn?

I'm always surprised at how frequently Sage is mentioned here versus Austin. From everything I've heard, Austin would seem to have a bright coaching future, and perhaps some intriguing Texas recruiting ties.

Still with the Sage stuff? Good lord. Austin Flynn would have a better shot and he has roughly a 0% chance of being hired in that capacity.

Football and basketball are also much, much different.

I understand what you're saying, and I'm sure Sage has a wealth of Xs and Os knowledge. Lots of people have that knowledge, and that's knowledge that can be learned. But that is a small part of being a coach. It's the other stuff that I mentioned that turns a smart guy into a good coach. Hoiberg got that extra stuff as part of the Timberwolves staff and front office. To my knowledge, Rosenfels hasn't had any experience with it.

What a predictable read this thread was. Why does everyone have to rehash the same debate every time someone brings up Sage Rosenfels? And why does someone always have to bring up Sage Rosenfels? It's worse than a helmet thread.

Sources tell us not to expect Pitt to hire a coordinator. “Their initial list is all current and former head coaches.”

I normally I would probably say, "I see what you did there," however that would be a contradiction based on the content of the article.

Well, MM is a coordinator and a former head coach, so he fits the description anyway.

I highly doubt MM gets offere the Pitt job, highly doubt. That's a top 20 job IMO. They are about to pour a bunch of new $$ into that place. Now maybe the hire him as OC but HC? no.

i could see them going after Tressel though. You know he's coming back and he has strong ties to Penn.

OC might be a difficult role to start out with. At the same time, I would place a lot of value on his experience. He did spend the Viking's 2009 season, given he had a bad ankle, basically serving as an extra coach. Brett Favre, new to the team that year, benefited greatly. And if not for the N.O. Saints "bounty gate" activity, Minnesota would likely have gone to the Super Bowl that year.

For now, though, Sage's interest seems to be in broadcasting. If he ever gives up on that, it seems an ideal entry role might be as a QB position coach. Much to learn in the profession as a whole, I would guess.

I engage in these threads, soley for the hope of reading a post like yours. It warms my heart to be put in my place by the internet's better people. It comforts me to know that you not only took the time to read a thread beneath you, but also to take the time and let us know how dumb it was.
