BYU & ND to the BIG12...!?

With BIG12 expansion expected, and likely necessary in the aftermath of last weekend’s actions of the College Football Playoff Committee (if you can call them that, I prefer the term cult following of OSU), I feel as though this is a great opportunity to add the academic prestige of the BIG, as well as the reputation of both football and men’s and women’s basketball.

With that being said, I think two teams stand out as perfect fits. Both of these teams bring academic prestige, one is a football power house, and the other has the makings of becoming a player with the conference in a short amount of time. Both of these teams, bring huge fan bases, and DEEP pockets.

So, I ask, what about adding BYU and the huge Mormon fan base that follows them, which only grows bigger as Mormons love having kids. The other team…? Notre Dame. I know, the initial thought of Notre Dame in the BIG 12 is gut wrenching, but just give it a thought. HUGE fan base, national recognition, top tier academics, top 15 in football, competitive in men’s and women’s basketball, and bring lot’s of money and TV interests too.

I know it is a long shot at landing ND, but definitely worth the discussion.

Why do people think we should expand? Even if the Big 12 did have a conference championship game, they still wouldn't have gotten a team in over Ohio $tate. The Big 12 is just going to need Texas and OU to step it up.

ND already turned down the Big 12. Not going to happen. Also, no way they want to play Texas, Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma in addition ot their annual games against Michigan and USC.

I think ND is at a point where they have to join a conference. They saw the statement the playoff committee made, you have to win a conference Championship to get in the playoffs. ND won’t join the BIG10 as the BIG10 is full (14), SEC (too far south) or ACC (too weak), too far for the PAC12, so that leaves the BIG 12 as the last remaining power five. I know they have alliances with the Big East, but they are nto a power five conference so that does ND no good.

Let be real here. There is no way you leave that cash cow out of the playoffs if they are on equal footing to any of the other teams being considered. A one loss ND would of been in the playoffs this year.

Only expand if the two teams are no brainers and add to the value of the conference... I'd prefer getting a the NCAA to remove the 12 team rule for a Championship Game and/or expand the playoffs to 8.

ND would be that no brainer but they have the best deal for them already in ACC. Getting to put their olympic sports there and leaving most of their FB psuedo independent. Not a fan of letting them do that in the BI2.

ND isn't going to join. The comments that ND can't get in to the playoff because they don't play a conference championship, were made to make fun of the decision. A 1 loss ND, probably would have bumped Ohio State. No way ND doesn't get in. No way they join the Big 12.

BYU? Not a bad choice over-all, but I think it would be a big **** on WVU, putting a team in that's two time-zones away. We need to give them a couple of regional partners, not make them have to travel further (not so much distance, but the time zones are a big deal 8:00pm BBall game in Utah, is 10pm WVU time.

There obviously wasn't a lot of foresight by the big 12 powers when they made the TCU and WVU grabs. They basically went for who they thought they could get. Now, if there is expansion, it's tough, because you can't spread your conference over the whole country. It's fine for football, but makes a real nightmare for almost every other sport.

All that being said, I'm still not sold that expansion is the best solution. ESPN, plenty of talking heads are going to convince you that a playoff is what you need, because it means more money for them. More than likely, the Baylor KSU game would have been the championship game anyways, so why didn't that count for anything. Highly doubtful that Baylor would have played TCU, so that's an idiotic point I heard a couple of times on ESPN on Saturday. No use talking about it ESPN, it wouldn't have happened. Ohio St. should have played Michigan St. by the ESPN logic I was hearing.

No conference championship, was just a convenient excuse and they latched on to it. If we would have played a championship game, they would have had another reason why the Big 12 was left out.

They are already a partial ACC member. They denied the Big 12 last time around, why would they change their mind now???

We were a slip up from FSU and a mediocre game by OSU away from having 2 teams in the playoff, which likely wouldn't have happened if we had a championship game (maybe it would maybe not depends on set up). While we are out there adding ND maybe we should see if the Packers would join for football too. ND would be great for any conference but they just aren't going to join one in football. BYU is one of the few schools that would makes sense, but without a 2nd that would add value for each school there is no reason to expand. Also remember that while yes we did get left out this year it was by an undefeated team and a team that beat a ranked team 59-0 as the last thing before the vote. 1 year is a pretty small sample size.

I thought at some point I heard that the NCAA has no sway over college football? Or is that just over the playoff? Why do we need to get a waiver to have a championship game? If we learned anything from the CM Punk podcast it's just easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.

People seem to think that having 12 teams and a championship game would have put a B12 team in the playoffs. Really? A conference championship game this year would have been Baylor against Kansas State. How does Baylor beating Kansas State again give them more television viewers than Ohio State.
