Could this actually happen?

2 Questions:

  1. How sweet would it be to have Jeff Woody, and Jake Knott as assistant coaches on our staff next year? Jeff as running backs, or a scout to breakdown the opponents deffenses. And Jake as Linbackers, or scout to breakdown the opponents offenses.
  2. Is this even a possibilty at anytime in the future?

1. Just because they were good players for us, does not mean they are good coaches. If it was that easy I'm assuming we wouldn't be in the position we are in right now.

Ding ding ding. You can't coach speed, you have to recruit it. You can build an amount of size, but it helps recruiting it as well.

I agree, good player don't translate to good coaches. But both of these players were vocal, on the field coaches, and were quite good at analizing film. Woody also has some pretty damn good insite during the weekly radio show. I am just curiuos, I don't think it will actually happen.

do they want to be coaches right now? I am sure Jake will want to continue playing in the NFL

If that happened now, it would just be a halfhearted PR move by a coach flailing to save his bacon, just like bringing back Jeff Grayer right before McDermott went to Creighton.

I'd rather not, because it puts those two guys in an awful position, and really just takes cynical advantage of our goodwill for those guys.

As much as I love Jeff Woody, he wasn't exactly an elite running back.

Jake Knott could be interesting though.

McDermott tried to hire the Iowa Energy coach, too, right? Maybe Rhoads should go after the Iowa Barnstormers guy.

IMO, that was one of the few McDermott smart moves (even though he bounced town right after). Nick Nurse is a heckuva good coach. I wouldn't be shocked if Nick is an NBA HEAD coach within a few years.

Lol only elite players make good position coaches

Yeah that's bogus. I've always heard that career backup quarterbacks make great coaches. They spend a lot of time doing nothing but dissecting the game. They break down film with everyone else. When the starter is out on the field, they watch and see how it's done.

Wouldn't mind seeing Sage somehow get involved. I think he would be one hell of a QB coach.

You mean like saying some players quit during the Kansas game, but didn't name names? Talk about throwing the whole team under the bus. Yeah, that's good "insight."

If you think Jeff Woody could teach anything but ball security and plowing forward I'd be interested to see clips of a single juke move or great vision in open field.

This isn't a dig at him, he is one of my favorite Cyclones and is a hell of a guy, but as a football player / RB he is what he is. I would love hearing him commentate games, I think he would be great in a role similar to what Ben Bruns does.

That would be interesting!

Yes, yes it would. thanks for catching that...it's definitely Friday!

He could show the clip of his fumble near the goal line in the closing minutes of the 2012 WVU game.

Could these guys be good coaches in the future? Yes. Would I want to hire both of them now? Probably not. If they really want to coach someday, they should start out as grad assistants or even at the high school level and work their way up. If Jake is still trying to play in the NFL, obviously this isn't an option.

On top of that, the idea that good players will automatically be good coaches is ridiculous, as well as the idea that bad players will not be good coaches. Magic Johnson wasn't exactly a great coach, but Bill Belichick is and played Division III football.
