Derrick Willies leaving Iowa

Section110... DO you think Iowa can beat Wisconsin? weirder stuff has happened with these two teams the last 20 years

Northwestern beat Wisconsin and Notre Dame this season, yet got their butts beat in by Iowa

All about matchups I guess. Who knows. Iowa could win be 3 points or lose by 35

Can they beat Wisconsin? Sure. I just don't think anyone knows what Iowa team will show up and even if they show up to play, whether they can slow down Gordon enough to win.

We will not beat Wisonsin because Ferentz and Co. either A) are too stupid to realize the game plan to beat them, or B) too stubborn to do so. We see the same schemes from Iowa week in and week out. Then they run into teams they happen to work well against every once in a while and all the sudden Ferentz is a coaching guru again.

Wisconsin is very beatable, it will all come down to coaching. Gordon ran all over Northwestern and Fitzgerald still figured out how to beat them

I agree with this. I'm not going to predict it but it's certainly likely. Iowa actually played pretty well on defense last year, shutting down Gordon, but the offense just couldn't do anything and the Iowa defense got worn down.

Too bad Fitzgerald is a homegrown coach @NW, ala Fred Hoiberg @ Ames. Would love for ISU to hire him away

I have no idea which Iowa team is going to show up. Are they capable of beating Wisconsin? Yes I think they are. Wisconsin looked unbeatable last week, but that's not how they've looked all season. I think Gordon is going to get his yards, but as long as Iowa doesn't let him go completely crazy I believe they'll have a chance to win it. My concern is that Iowa has struggled against very good running backs this year, and clearly Gordon is the best in the nation. Which ultimately comes back to the fact Iowa's been trying to replace 3 very good linebackers from last year. Those guys did a very good job of keeping Gordon in check a year ago. The defensive line is better this year, and that will help, but can these linebackers step up and perform the way they need to in order to get the W? That's the big question mark to me.

Then obviously the Iowa offense needs to be the pretty good version that we've seen flashes of this year. I think Iowa needs to score 30 or more to win this game. So I guess my answer for you is yes. I think Iowa can beat Wisconsin. If I had to guess whether or not Iowa will beat them I would say no. I think Gordon will have 200+ yards and probably 2-3 TDs. David Johnson and Tevin Coleman were able to slice up the Hawkeye defense. Wisconsin has a far better offensive line than both UNI and Indiana, and Gordon is incredible. I wouldn't be surprised to see Iowa make it interesting, but I'd be pretty shocked (and happy) to see them pull out a win.

Iowa might be ok, but I doubt it. Their 7 wins are quite inflated by beating losers. They havent beaten a team with a record better than 4-6. They also lost to us, Maryland, and Minnesota.

Pretty lame.

I don't disagree with any of this. It has been a pretty lame season. Absolutely no excuse to lose to ISU or Maryland. As a Hawk fan I'm very upset about their performance in those two games. I'm not upset about them losing to Minnesota, but it does bother me the way in which they lost. Just completely manhandled physically which is really not something you ever see happen to Iowa. It snowballed a bit thanks to some boneheaded turnovers, and that's why the scoring margin ended the way it did, but the bottom line is yes all three of those losses hurt in their own way.

Win or lose, he's not leaving anytime soon unless he wants to.

How do you figure? If Iowa loses the final two games in the manner they lost to Minnesota, expect a buyout - Iowa can afford it and save 7 million if he's fired at the end of this season.

Because we're Iowa. We could lose the final two games by a combined 100-0 and there's no way KF is shown the door. In fact, GB would probably call a presser in the off-season to announce we're naming a new building after him. It's Iowa football. We don't do assertive. The most daring move we've made in the past 15 years is hire an OC who runs 4-yard out patterns on 3rd and 8. Our president and AD make this guy look aggressive...

I hope you're wrong - most years I'd agree with this 100%. I think people are finally 'getting it' though. The apathy and overall staleness of the program can't be ignored. Don't think he coaches beyond next year..

Question for you, How closely does Kirk's current situation resemble the Tom Davis tenure? It's not necessarily destined to repeat itself; but is the potential upside worth it, knowing what you do about the 10 years following letting Davis go?

The only way Ferentz goes before he wants to is if butts stop showing up in the seats, and I'm not even sure that would do it. The football program makes that university oodles of money, and apparently that's all Barta and Mason care about. Probably because Barta has no balls to do anything with Ferentz and Mason could give 2 *****, as long as the $$$ keeps flowing.

Honest question, if the regents or boosters or whomever show up with a check for KF buyout is the university obligated to act? Or can Mason tell them to shove it?

It might be pretty close, but it's hard to compare because football and basketball at Iowa are such different animals. Since 1979 we've had 2 head football coaches. In basketball, since Lute left, we're averaging a new coach about every six years. I'd be willing to bet more people right now are fed up with the KF show than were wanting to see Dr. Tom leave, but in MBB they're not nearly as gunshy when it comes to shaking things up. I'm sure it just comes down to $$$ and as long as football keeps it rolling in, status quo wins, regardless of what fans think.

I think it's also much easier to turn around a basketball program than a football program (less moving pieces) so the potential downside to a basketball change isn't going to be as damaging as the potential downside to a football change (not to mention revenue differences). I completely understand why it's harder to make a change for an average to decent football program under a coach with some good high points would be a much tougher decision than with a basketball coach in a similar situation.

Yes there is no excuse, Iowa absolutely sucks. I know that is hard for you to accept, but ISU and Maryland beat Iowa because they were better than Iowa, or at least ISU was better at that point in time. The wheel have fallen off for ISU, but they were pretty bad even when they played Iowa.

Respectfully disagree. Iowa fans and ISU fans are much different in terms of standards for football. ISU fans have just recently started to turn on Rhoads. Iowa fans would have bailed on him a long time ago.

I will agree with you that there's really nothing fans can do. I never meant to insinuate that in my post. If it came down to it both schools could fire their coach and they'd work it out financially. Whether or not that happens is ultimately up to the A.D.'s.

Haha. You mean like as quickly as we bailed on Commings?

There are things fans can do. But got to impress your friends and also have your fall social time.
