Derrick Willies leaving Iowa

it's hard to say without having video of it but just reading the transcript it appears that he hadn't heard it. Why would he lie about this?

I wonder if KF will take him back. My source told me the only reason he came back was because no other P5 schools would offer him a scholarship and he would have had to walk on somewhere else. Kirk's program is really fractured now though so if he thinks he will help down the road I think he has to take him back

Stop. Quit acting like you have a sources; especially when it pertains to Iowa. What P5 conference would possibly want a 6'4 receiver with 4.4 speed. Iowa State fans should know as well as anyone that it's not 'transfer season'.

Don't shoot the messenger. The kid wasn't catching balls on a team that doesn't have good WR's so maybe that's why. Who knows, seems like Iowa is better off with him on their team if he develops since he has good size.

You may want to get a new source. .. He was catching balls when he was in, just hardly saw action on the account of him being a freshman and Ferentz being overly loyal to upperclassmen. This routinely happens, to the point that the product on the field suffers as guys who should be playing are on the sidelines.

If you're hardly seeing action as a WR at Iowa you aren't that good regardless of age. You really think Kirk plays less talented guys because he wants to lose or something? My guess is he needs to improve his route running or blocking since he seems to have good size and speed. Like I said, him coming back should be a positive for Iowa.

Kirk is terrible at evaluating talent at anything other than the line. He's stubborn, which is why he continues to play Rudock despite his ineffectiveness. Banks only started one year and in that year was Heisman runner up, so yes he does favor upperclassmen and more rugged blue collar types. But yes, Iowa will be grateful to have him back in ththe next two years, hopefully under a new head coach...

Kirk hated DJK and he still caught 38 balls as a freshman because he was that good. Willies has a chance to be pretty good with his frame but he isn't there yet.

I hope KF is still the coach next year and many years to come

FWIW the die hard hawk fans I talk to have heard the same rumor. He couldn't get a scholarship offer so he choose to come back.

The year DJK was a freshmen was also a pitiful year of Iowa football with Christensen our QB and DJK playing mostly due to injuries. Iowa has some pretty talented receivers right now but nobody to get them the ball. Tevaun Smith is the best one, and that's the slot that Willies would play.

Ferentz won't be hear many years to come, and these last two games could dictate that a lot. Though I don't blame you for wishing that. CPR can stay too by the way..

I'm not sure on regulations but I bet it's in violation to be recruitint Willies and talking about scholarship offers..

Say what? I'd say Smith is your only receiver that is pretty talented, KMM is just a possession guy and Powell is a one trick pony. Other than that I don't know a single other WR for them.

KMM stretched the field a lot more early on in his career when threw deep. He'd look a lot better on a team with a capable QB. Powell still manages to be a deep threat and would look a lot better with CJB throwing to him. Hillyer is a big 6'4 target and then we have a speedster in Parker and good TE's.
Nobodys confusing this talent for the McNutt/DJK tandem but they're a lot better than what we've seen - it's our horizontal passing game and constant check downs that make them easy to dismiss.

It was my understanding he quit the team and left school. He was no longer under scholarship at Iowa. I think they offered his schollie to someone else. Very poor on his part to announce his departure via FB and twitter, before talking to coaches, then proclaim he is returning via Twitter without talking to coaches. If he indeed did drop out of school, he won't be back for this season.

Remember when some crazy people insisted that Ferentz kept DJK from being drafted because he is SOOO INFLUENTIAL in the nfl draft process? If Willies had the super duper skills set, you would think at least one school would take a chance on him.

Iowa has the worst WRs Ive seen from a Power 5 this year. Super glad this kid is staying. They need an upgrade at WR and with him they dont get one.

That's the word on the street.

Hillyer can't catch. Parker is 5'8 and has caught three passes this year. Sure he has speed but when we run him on the jet sweep it's so obvious that a blind kid in Russia knows it's coming. He's fumbled on that play as many times as he's broken one long. I agree with Cy that Tevaun is the one guy who's really a threat for us, KMM is mostly an underneath guy. Powell has shown flashes downfield but our coaches prefer to use him on the bubble screen because we burned Minnesota once on it last year. Hillyer should be better than he is, has good size and speed, just has bad hands. We're much stronger at TE than WR.

KF absolutely starts less talented guys out of loyalty and seniority. This isn't up for dispute. The guy started f*cking Paki O'Meara at RB for us as a senior when we had much better guys as sophs and freshmen. He stuck with Christensen over Stanzi until the rest of his staff finally convinced him. He started Kyle McCann as a senior when he had a Heisman runner-up in Banks sitting on the bench as a junior. Obviously KF doesn't do this because he wants to lose, but he absolutely does it.

The Beathard v. Rudock debate is a close one. I prefer CJ and think Rudock takes way too long to read what's going on. But after CJ brought us back against Pitt and KF was being interviewed and asked about CJ's play, KF's immediate response was how Jake is really good and that CJ practiced like crap that week. There's no question KF is loyal to Jake and CJ, not so much.
