Just random thoughts on lack of success of Iowa State football..

Strength of Schedule is too difficult....

The current and last 2 coaches are good recruiters but still struggle(d) to bring in enough talent...

I think other schools similar to ISU have moved up the football success ladder but many could probably have their means and methods questioned...

I don't think Rhoads is nearly the recruiter DMac or Chiz was. Not that they brought in great talent. I think that's our primary problem.

Do you really care about means and methods? I sure as hell don't. Winning is winning and losing is losing. If we have some methods questioned, who cares.

Don't care either. Really I just want to watch a decent football team. Failing that, one that is fun to watch. CPR had it first few years, but couldn't keep it going once he had to play just his recruits.

Since you think the Strength of Schedule is too difficult, what do you suggest? The schedule won't get too much easier even if you schedule a bunch of patsys for non-conference. Change conferences? Not happening (we like the $$ playing in a power conference too much).

ISU's problems are on the lines. We have enough talent at the skill positions to compete with everyone in the conference. Unfortunately, our d-line can't stop the run or rush the passer and the o-line can't run block to save their life. The current coach is a good recruiter??? Rhoads is a horrible recruiter. His only success (6-7 win seasons) came playing with players recruited by the previous regimes.

How about crappy players coupled with crap coaches? That is what it all boils down to. Who gives a flying **** about SOS.

This. We think Lazard, Montgomery, Morrisey, Miller, are all really good. I'm not sure any of those guys start for more than half the teams in the conference. Our good players, are average big 12 players. And our average players are way below average big 12 players.

Here's my random thought: The players have stopped believing in CPR, therefore play way below average. I think the lack of execution on the field is the main problem, and that issue boils down preparation and coaching. There are two phases of prep -- schematic and psychological. I think schematically the coaches are doing what needs to be done, it's the mental prep that failing badly. Once a coach loses his players, he pretty much done. Time to find a new HC.

Wait.... who thinks Miller is really good? At most a mediocre Big 12 LB... but way better than his replacements.

LB play is worse than DL.

I am not enamored with the backfield with, both of them.

D - Always chasing the receiver. Fumbling with our feet tangled to the ground. Taking bad angles.

O - Only one or two hundred yard rusher in two years. Three and outs record numbers. Running into the pile for a yard.

The best thing the offense has done is limit the turnovers so we always get to punt.

Lazard and Montgomery are really good WR's IMO. I believe that. Morrissey is a bit overrated... you just hardly ever hear his name called anymore and when you watch him he pretty much gets handled. And I don't think anyone has ever thought Miller was any good.

Miller led the team in tackles.... big deal. That doesn't mean a whole lot IMO. No matter how bad you are, someone has to lead the team in tackles, right? It doesn't mean you are necessarily good.

This, however; we have not been bowl eligible since any of Chiz' recruits were in the starting lineup.

Outside of Bibbs and Lazard, we have almost no one that could start for the top 6-7 teams in the conference. We may have 1-2 players on each side of the ball, depending on which team you're putting them on, but the rest wouldn't even break into most of the 2-deeps.

When you talk about Tech and KU, we probably have a handful that would start or challenge for a starting spot, but clearly not enough to win with.

SOS is not an argument or excuse for the coaching staff. It can't be. Too many teams (including us at times) have been there and done things with the same schedule.

This is entirely on the staff and their recruiting...
"But this is the best class we have had yet!" they say every year, yet we have gotten worse every year.
Paul's best year was his first, when 0 of the players were his to recruit. His worst year (until now) was last year, when 100% of the players were his. Coincidence?

Im sure having the new offensive staff will help with recruiting for next year. but how much? Not enough to compete in the Big 12 with Paul at the helm

I love his enthusiasm and him as a person. But I am tired of people content with sub-mediocrity. The "this is Iowa State, we will never win" mentality is ********. We have lost to TWO FCS schools in a row. There are 0 excuses.

Forgive me if this was already said but I think it all comes down to passion, energy, and fire to compete! This is how we've pulled off huge upsets in the past. I feel like our team is missing a leader, especially a student leader. Isn't that what a quarterback is supposed to bring? Even one with an injury?

This can help, and was certainly a factor against KU and NDSU, but frankly, you're assuming that your little/slow/untalented guys can be "more passionate or energetic" than the taller/bigger/faster players on a team like Okie State or OU, etc. It's not as if the players we're playing against or opposing coaches, aren't try to be passionate, and disciplined as well.

You still need an upgrade on the talent level to compete in the B12 consistently, IMO.

We aren't looking for upsets. We are looking to be the favorites. If all we aim for is upsets, then that means we are continually a middle of the road to bottomfeeder.
