Derrick Willies leaving Iowa

I wonder if Dean knows how fractured the program really is?

He'd like to be able to tell you/us but there's the whole "banished to a barren hellscape" thing.

Does Beathard transfer or does he wait it out and hope KF wakes up?

If he doesn't get much PT by the end of the season j bet he's gone.
I think Spearman should transfer here. He's only 18 still as a soph, he should've been redshirted. He'd be better with his hand on the ground after a redshirt year.

This seems to fly in the face of the prevailing storyline.

It was said that OLine ships were sacrificed to bring in more "skill" talent.

Now, the OLine isn't good and the "skill" people have realized they signed up to play for the 1970 Pittsburgh Steelers.

Beathard had to know when he made public statements about Willies' being dissatisfied with playing time that it would p*ss off KF something fierce. I don't think he'd do that if he had a long-term vested interest in the program. This is just my opinion though. He may just be dim about stuff like that, who knows. I don't see how you could blame him. KF says he'll definitely play against Maryland, then he doesn't play, even when Rudock is playing like true garbage. Unless he really was hurt. After CJB brought us back against the Pitt hole that Rudock helped dig, and then led us to a road win at Purdue in his first start, any time KF was asked about CJB he found a way to pivot and talk about how good Rudock is.

This isn't the first time KF has had to be dragged kicking and screaming to go against the starting QB he "believed" in and put in the #2 guy. See Ricky Stanzi. And this is the coach who left a Heisman runner up QB on the bench for an entire season in favor of Kyle McCann. But McCann was a senior, I guess.

What did CJB say about Willies playing time? Missed that.

In Kirk's defense Jerome Tiller could have led Iowa to a win against Purdue and CJ looked pretty bad in his only start of the season. I still think he is a little better than Rudock but that's not saying much

Nah. CJ played solid against Purdue. Not sure if you watched the game or not, but a big storyline was our WRs and TEs dropping no less than 6 passes that they had zero excuse dropping, including a TD pass that hit Hillyer squarely in the numbers. Beathard did look bad in the first quarter, but for the rest of the game played well.

17-37 with a pick 6 against one of the worst teams in college football was solid? I thought he looked good against Pitt and is better than Rudock but thought the Purdue game certainly didn't help his cause in getting more PT

The program chalked it up to him wanting to be closer to his dad. KF was asked if Willies had expressed dissatisfaction with lack of playing time, and said no. Beathard and Willies were tight, CJ talked to him the day before he announced the transfer. Here's what CJ said when asked if Willies wasn't happy with playing time:

"I think that was one of the things," Beathard said. "I guess he wasn't getting the reps that he wanted to get and that was maybe one of the reasons (Willies decided to leave). But there was a lot of stuff that went into it."

Is a Beathard transfer coming soon as well? I have to assume if Iowa keeps losing and continues to play Ruddock I would highly consider transferring...

Yeah, I said he was bad in the first quarter when the pick six happened. Of course you can look at that stat line and say 'bad'. Did you watch the game? Unless you blame the kid for drops that should never have been dropped, his stat line would have been 23-37, 300+ yards and two TDs. I'll call that solid. He was throwing the ball well and making good decisions in the pocket.

It was just my opinion and I didn't think he helped his cause that game in Kirk's eyes. I doubt Kirk will let that pick 6 and the fact the game was tied at halftime leave his mind any time soon. That was set up for a good opportunity to go out there and win the job and he didn't do that. I still think Kirk is an idiot and Iowa's WR's are terrible so I know it wasn't all his fault

I tried to watch the game, but big 10 football puts me asleep. It's like my own version of NyQuil.

That's exactly the issue. KF definitely will hang that over Beathard. The problem is he doesn't do the same with Rudock, who has played horribly in multiple games this year. Look at how Rudock played against Maryland. That was a pretty damaging pick six he threw, but somehow that one's ok and that crappy performance, which was much, much worse than CJ against Purdue, is fine.

KF being KF. I still think Beathard could have ran away with the job that Purdue game and that would frustrate me as an Iowa fan because he seems like he has more raw talent. Rudock hasn't looked great this season but statistically has been better than CJ. It's pretty obvious KF doesn't trust CJ otherwise there would have been no reason not to put him in at the end of that Maryland game

The thing that would be more concerning about Beathard's interview, (if I'm an Iowa fan) is his response when asked about his own future. He basically said "I'm only focused on this year." Those are the words of someone who is strongly considering leaving.

Safety has always been KF's thing. He coaches afraid. Rudock is the safe play. CJ is much more willing to take chances downfield and making tougher passes that JR isn't willing to try. KF likes that.

Which is stupid because JR is continually dropping pick 6s and 3 and outs constantly.
