Derrick Willies leaving Iowa

Fraentiz is done. Both Barta and Fuhrehntz need to be fired to turn that program around. But they're too stupid to realize it.

Barta is not being fired, Kirk is not being fired.
That schedule is just too easy, and Iowa will be at the Gator bowl, against a decent SEC team.
I don't care for Iowa but that's just the truth. 5 games left, only 1 of those games against a ranked team: Nebraska (who is beatable at home).

Great news

Maryland wasn't ranked and neither were we. I see Iowa going 2-3 in the last five.

I don't think the Iowa football program is crashing at all. The program is stagnant, yes. Most years they have 6-8 wins, with the occasional >8 or <6 win season. That's pretty damn good for a school in the state of Iowa. Can make excuses about how easy their conference is,but still, what Ferentz has done is commendable. I'd love for that kind of "crashing" program at ISU. And I am surprised at how frustrated hawk fans are getting with KF.

The Iowa basketball program? Now that's a whole different argument.

I think both programs are in great hands. In fact, I plan on e-mailing Barta, Sally Mason and the BoR today to let them know what I think!

I'm not surprised. I watched it with Dr. Tom

Coaching changes are risky. I think Iowa fans are bat-**** crazy for wanting to fire Ferentz.

I agree for the most part, but something needs to change. With the offense they run, they are consistently going to get good lineman that go pro. What they won't get is dynamic skill players that can stretch the defense. Tell me what elite HS or JUCO receiver that would want to go Iowa right now looking at their offensive strategy? Kids want to play up tempo exciting offenses when they go to college. Not Run, Run, play action check down.

Iowa is about as vanilla as they get.

The only thing I know about this guy is when deano was bragging him up before the Cy-Hawk game, saying how he is better than Lazard and that he would outplay him.

Don't know if it was Deano. Numbnuts Section110 did as evidenced below:
Derrick Willies (6'4 205) and Tevaun Smith (6'2 200) are both big and fast receivers who have a lot of potential. The Iowa coaches have been talking up Willies as a playmaker since bowl prep last season, and he certainly showed it during the two open practices in the spring. Tevaun Smith's stock started to rise as he gained more and more experience last year. He made a damn good catch and run in the Michigan game that helped the Hawks pull off the W. Between Hillyer (6'4 205), Willies, and Smith the Hawks will also have a significant size advantage against the Cyclone CB's. I think Tribune is 5'10 179 and Richardson is 5'7 189.

This is the main reason I think Iowa will cover the 9.5 points. The Hawks haven't had big play threats at WR for quite some time, and I believe we'll see more of that this year. Plus their size advantage is going to help out Iowa's running game also. ISU is going to sell out to stop the run. I think they have to sell out to stop the run. That strategy might work for awhile, but eventually Iowa will make them pay. My bet would be on Willies to become "that guy".

Heard on kXno this morning where it was said that an outside skill position player would be hard pressed to really look at either school and get excited. I'm paraphrasing, of course, but I took issue with it.

I think you can look at Iowa State, a school that recruited Willies, and say a WR could get excited about Iowa State. As mentioned, Willies has 4 catches on the season, as a redshirt freshman. Look at Iowa State:

- Lazard (FR): 29 catches for 392
- Montgomery (RSO): 21 catches for 230
- Daley (RSO): 19 for 184
- West (RSR): 21 for 174 (and he's missed 3 games)

Now...look at Jauan Wesley, from Harvey, Illinois. Kid is a true freshman. He's 5'11", 175 and has a 4.65 40 (Willies is 6'4", 200 with a 4.45). Wesley has only played in the 3 games West has missed, and he's caught 7 for 82 yards. Not a huge YPC equivalent, but he's certainly being targeted even after some big drops in his first action.

A guy with Willies measurables (he's either bigger, faster or both than any of the guys above), should be much more of a target. We all "know" Greg Davis, with him being at Texas, and I certainly had a feeling he would be bad at Iowa. He was terrible with Texas talent, and he's throwing the same offense out there with Iowa talent.

Combine that with a head man who has "his guys", which really seems to reward tenure, while being OK with an archaic scheme, and it's a recipe for disaster.

LONG MAY THEY REIGN

In his radio show last night, Hlas said Iowa hasn't been in the top 25 in the last four years. "They are basically a .500 team".

Sure, Iowa State would like to a .500 team right now. But Iowa's recent record just shows the Hayden Fry/Bill Snyder/Barry Alvarez days are over. It's just that some Iowa fans have not figured that out and actually thought they would be 11-1 this year with the easy schedule.

Yeah, trying to get actual sports content from KXNO in the morning is where you made your first mistake. The ISU offense is just getting started and Iowa fans know what Greg Davis has to offer. Of course the Morning Rush brain trust would try to talk down both offenses as being bad.

I heard many Iowa fans talk up Willies hoping they could actually get a playmaker on the field. Ferentz is just stuck in 1985 and insists on playing the old school game where you play the upper classmen and forcing players to earn their PT. He refuses to take a chance on younger guys. He refuses to bench his starter for a backup who was playing better.

I can see why Hawk fans are getting sick of him and God Damn Greg Davis. No one has the power to force KF out right now. Hopefully no one has the power to force him to replace Greg Davis either.

Their problem, besides being iowa fans, is that they think their program should be a consistent 10-win, top 10, competing for conference and national titles type. They've won the conference 5 times since 1960, 4 of which were shared. Its the over-inflated expectations that irritate me as much as anything about their fanbase. It sure would suck to win 6, 7 or 8 games on a regular basis at ISU, wouldn't it?

just listened and he said if you were a good WR would you look at Iowa to play, Ross goes HELL NO, and would you look at Iowa State and Ross replies HELL NO.

what an idiot

I won't be too hard on you hippity since I don't blame you for not watching this Iowa team but they play a ton of young players.

Now Greg Davis? Yes, I think pretty much everyone has seen enough of him. I'll give ISU fans credit when they told all the Iowa fans what the offense would look like when he was hired.
