Random question here.

My my son is in third grade and involved in the clover kids level of 4H. He can't show pigs until at least 4th grade but can show rabbits next summer. He is begging to get a couple rabbits and we've said he could.

Problem is I have no clue where to begin on this. Does anyone know of anyone in Central Iowa that sells meat rabbits for 4H projects.

Any help is appreciated.

Awesome question, actually. We are in the same boat, and would love to hear what this site has to offer.

I have a rabbit if you want it. 2 yr old Holland lop. He is not overly friendly - does not bite or anything just kind of anti-social. Cute little thing though. Got him two years ago at the ISF.

I have like 3 rabbits that live in or around my backyard, PM me and you can sit outside Elmer Fudd style and nab em. Just don't be fooled if one of them pretends to be a beautiful woman.

There are a couple people that are big into rabbits in Northern Kossuth County. Could call our extension office and get there names. 515-295-2469 in Kossuth Extension

My kids have 3 rabbits w/ hutches we are looking to offload. They are blue ribbon quality from the Story Co. Fair.

FYI: If you want to win, you need to get familiar with the specific definition of each breed and find rabbits that best match those expectations. PM me if intersted. First come first serve as is someelse we are talking to.

I don't know boo about rabbits, but get those Flemish Giants they are a neat looking rabbit. I would post a pic but I don't know how.

I was forced into showing rabbits because my aunt raised them for fun. I showed for 10 years including the state fair. Needless to say those trophys are in a closet while the cattle and pig trophys are still out.

Call your extension office and ask who the rabbit superintendant is, then talk to them, they will get you in touch with whoever raises rabbits in the area.

Easiest way in my opinion is with meat rabbits, such as californians. Really all you have to worry about is keeping them alive. Just buy rabbit food at your local farm store. Make sure they dont freeze to death or die of heat. Make sure your dogs dont kill them. Make sure that whatever you use as a hutch is not rusty or it will discolor the fur and that is frowned upon. Make your kids hold them so they dont flip out when you have to show them. Prepare your kids to have life long scars on their arms from those little devil spawns.

DO NOT BUY BREEDING RABBITS: Breeding rabbits is stupid and should only be done buy stupid "rabbit" people. Just buy new ones each year and sell the others at the livestock sale. The last thing you want to deal with is keeping rabbits over the winter. If your kid argues, lie to them and tell them thats the rules. Dont listen to people that try to sell you some "awesome pedigree" rabbit, its a rabbit. Not a show steer. Who the hell cares.

Do not let the rabbits in your house, treat them as livestock obviously. While the project is stupid and somewhat embarassing it did actually teach me to do chores and crap before I was able to show real animals at state and county fair.

If you tell me where you are located I can possibly hook you up. Southwest IA?

Oh also, dont buy rabbits that are like a year old. Buy feeder rabbits. I dont know if thats what they are called, but buy the equivilant to feeder pigs/cattle that you would weigh in for county fair.

Thanks for the info. I grew up showing cattle and hogs and I'm more confused by this rabbit thing.

Unfortunately it appears we will have rabbits through the winter. I made the mistake of promising him he could start them this fall. Now just need to find a place to keep the dam things.

Doing a quick google search I see what you mean by rabbit people. Holy cow there are people that are really passionate about rabbits.

In all honesty I'm hoping the rabbits thing only lasts a couple years once he start showing hogs. Unfortunately he has two younger sisters that will probably want to show rabbits as well when they are old enough.

This guy gets it.

Seems like the phrase "meat rabbit" lends itself to a lot of possible jokes. None of which I'll go into.
