I went to see Lake Travis lay a beatdown on Del Valle this past Friday night because it was Westlake's bye week and i just thought I'd report back to you guys what I saw out of DeLira.
DeLira only played one half because it was and absolute blowout (Del Valle sucks and LT is very good) but Dom was 12-25 passing in the half that he did play.
- One thing I noticed initially is that DeLira is not a great passer when rolling or being flushed out of the pocket. He's okay, but he short-arms the ball sometimes which results in the ball hitting the turf short of the receiver. He is however better at throwing while rolling to his right than his left.
- His completion percentage is a little bit deceiving because his WR group dropped quite a few passes that he put on the money from the pocket.
- He is a very accurate pocket passer on he short to intermediate routes, which is what LT's quick strike offense mostly consists of.
- He did sail the ball a few times, which could be attributed to nerves because it was his first game back from suspension. Frankly, he just seemed unsure of many throws he was making.
- He's decent at throwing the ball "to a spot" (but not great) which is fine because again, that's not how LT's offense is designed to operate.
- He's a good runner (not quite sure I'd call him a dual-threat) and he can get the yards you need him to as well as run when the pocket breaks down.
- He will likely split halves with 2017 QB Charlie Brewer (ISU should take a serious look at this kid) up until the Westlake game so Carter can get a good gauge on who should be under center against the Chaps. I will say this though, if DeLira doesn't improve over the next 3 weeks, Brewer will get the starting nod against Westlake and Coach Carter has made that very clear.
Some other LT players y'all should watch for:
2016 RB Abe Willows- Easily their best offensive weapon right now and on pace to have one of the best years LT has ever had rushing the football. He's very elusive and keeps his legs turning when hit. The only thing I can critique him on is that he runs straight up a lot and doesn't bend his knees nearly enough which could lead to an injury if he's not careful.
2017 LB Sammy Ochoa- My gosh this kid is HUGE for 15 years old and he's got a mean streak and a nose for the football. Will be a very good LB in time.
2017 WR Maleek Barkley- Small, fast, shifty kid with very good hands. Already has the game-breaking ability to take it te distance every time he touches the ball.
Hope y'all enjoyed it!
