2015 QB Dominic DeLira Thoughts...

I went to see Lake Travis lay a beatdown on Del Valle this past Friday night because it was Westlake's bye week and i just thought I'd report back to you guys what I saw out of DeLira.

DeLira only played one half because it was and absolute blowout (Del Valle sucks and LT is very good) but Dom was 12-25 passing in the half that he did play.

- One thing I noticed initially is that DeLira is not a great passer when rolling or being flushed out of the pocket. He's okay, but he short-arms the ball sometimes which results in the ball hitting the turf short of the receiver. He is however better at throwing while rolling to his right than his left.

- His completion percentage is a little bit deceiving because his WR group dropped quite a few passes that he put on the money from the pocket.

- He is a very accurate pocket passer on he short to intermediate routes, which is what LT's quick strike offense mostly consists of.

- He did sail the ball a few times, which could be attributed to nerves because it was his first game back from suspension. Frankly, he just seemed unsure of many throws he was making.

- He's decent at throwing the ball "to a spot" (but not great) which is fine because again, that's not how LT's offense is designed to operate.

- He's a good runner (not quite sure I'd call him a dual-threat) and he can get the yards you need him to as well as run when the pocket breaks down.

- He will likely split halves with 2017 QB Charlie Brewer (ISU should take a serious look at this kid) up until the Westlake game so Carter can get a good gauge on who should be under center against the Chaps. I will say this though, if DeLira doesn't improve over the next 3 weeks, Brewer will get the starting nod against Westlake and Coach Carter has made that very clear.

Some other LT players y'all should watch for:
2016 RB Abe Willows- Easily their best offensive weapon right now and on pace to have one of the best years LT has ever had rushing the football. He's very elusive and keeps his legs turning when hit. The only thing I can critique him on is that he runs straight up a lot and doesn't bend his knees nearly enough which could lead to an injury if he's not careful.

2017 LB Sammy Ochoa- My gosh this kid is HUGE for 15 years old and he's got a mean streak and a nose for the football. Will be a very good LB in time.

2017 WR Maleek Barkley- Small, fast, shifty kid with very good hands. Already has the game-breaking ability to take it te distance every time he touches the ball.

Hope y'all enjoyed it!

Thanks for the update. I personally really liked this kid on video. Not being a dual-threat would limit our offense some, but Mangino knows how to work around that.

Thanks for the info, kind of sounds like he would have had to play pretty well from the get go to beat out Brewer. Crazy to think of these Texas schools that have back up QB's with Big 12 offers

OP: How big is Charlie Brewer? He's listed as 5'11" and 156# on 24/7.

I'd say that 5'11 160lbs is about right. He's not a very big kid, but he's only 15 years old. He's like his brother (VaTech QB) in a lot of ways. Very good athlete with good intangibles and a very accurate passer.

I will say that if LT is to beat Westlake, DeLira has to play and play better. There's just no way that Brewer can go head-to-head with 2017 Westlake QB Sam Ehlinger right now and beat him. Ehlinger would get into his head too quickly and the defense, anchored by 2015 LB Breckyn Hager (Texas) would be all over the poor kid.

That is the case for some schools with talented kid that are younger. LT and DeLira's situation is unique because of the arrest. If not for that, DeLira would be the clear-cut starter and Brewer would be coming in for mop up duty against inferior opponents.

I feel like my assessment of Dom may have been a bit harsh. He's a very good QB that will just need some time to readjust to the speed of the game. I'm just not sure how patient Coach Carter is willing to be with Westlake only a few weeks away and Brewer already having played against Waco Midway and done fairly well.

DeLira looked good again tonight according to my friends at the game. His team rolled 62-6

Dominic DeLira accounted for three touchdowns, and Lake Travis quickly separated themselves from Austin High in a 62-6 win at House Park. Lake Travis improved to 5-0 in its games against District 14-6A competition, and the Cavaliers will test that unblemished district mark over the next two weeks against Westlake and Bowie.

The Cavaliers scored all of their 2013 points in the first half, and a DeLira-engineered offense wasted little time getting points onto the scoreboard on Thursday.

DeLira found wide receiver Grant Foster for 11- and 45-yard scores during an eight-minute span in the first half, and those two touchdown tosses sandwiched a 1-yard scoring run by the Iowa State-bound quarterback. Two other Cavaliers — Kevin Hathaway on a trick play and back-up quarterback Charlie Brewer — threw a touchdown pass before halftime, and touchdown runs by Luke Laney and Maleek Barkley contributed to Lake Travis’ 49-0 locker room lead.
