Jacob got 4 years of tuition, and played 4 years of football. He doesn't owe anyone anything. I just don't know why we all expect him to sink with the ship when he has a promising future ahead of him, given his academic distinctions.

How many places have you worked where everyone likes their boss?

You can not like someone but respect them. As soon as the respect is out the window...that's when you're toast. Losing a lot tends to hurt in the respect column. Running your players into the ground tends to hurt the respect your players have for you.

Let's say it's Saturday night, and you have the option of going to a party or seeing a movie. If you choose the movie, and an hour into it you realize it's the worst movie ever made, do you stick around for the remaining hour? Many people would say "well, I already paid for the movie, I might as well stay". A more rational person would say "well, I'm already out the $10 I paid for a ticket (a sunk cost), I might as well leave and go to that party instead."

Same thing with this kid. It doesn't matter how long he's been with the team or how many hours of practice he's gone through; those are sunk costs that aren't recoverable, and should have no bearing on whether he wants to stay with the team for the remainder of the season.

But he is not paying to be on the football, we are paying him.

If the movie pays you $10 to watch the movie and you walk out halfway through because you don't like it, is that fair?

I too usually call up my extended family <24 hours after I quit the team to fill them in on all of my life's choices.

Yeah, when they come to all your games, it would make more sense to tell them on Sunday.

Whether the players like/love CPR is not the point. What matters is that they must respect him and believe in his leadership.

I've liked people who were terrible leaders. I've bought in to the programs of leaders that I didn't particularly like (and who probably didn't like me). We all have.

It happens all the time with contracts. Think Russell Wilson loves being paid a fraction of what most quarterbacks make even though unlike most quarterbacks he has a ring?

But, if you recall, we don't "pay" college athletes. If the "contract" allows for a player to quit and continue having his scholarship played for, that is the "contracts" problem.

If he doesn't have passion see ya later. It's guys who don't want to be great that leads us to where we are now with this football program. If I was Coach I'd show the whole team the door and ask them what's really important in your life. If football isn't a priority see ya later.

Players who don't appreciate their teammates and aren't willing to work hard with passion act as cancer to their team.

I am going to throw out a crazy thought. He is a human being. He didn't know 100% what he wanted at the beginning of the season. He was already on the fence, things weren't going well, he picked a different path.

In terms of him "signing a contract," he clearly didn't, otherwise there would be lawsuits every time a player left the team for breach of contract.

Again, who has left after the first game in between home games? He also knows how prepared his backup will be.

If I'm responsible for paying back $5 for the half of the movie I didn't watch, then yes, it is fair.

I doubt Mangino would be "going off" on the defense. No one would allow that. Maybe Shane is taking on new level of leadership? Sounds very odd. That part of the story seemed to have something missing or be a bit 'off' in some way. I have my doubts about the veracity of this "rumor" in part and nearly in it's entirety. Too much of a "Ferris fainted at 31 flavors" ring to it.

Man losing has brought some trolls out of the wood work. I really wish Rebekacy or whatever his name was could come and tell us how he talked to JP and was pulling his donation for the 1,000th time.

Kid has put in blood sweat and tears for 4 years, realizes the end is near and would prefer to have a job in January and move on with life vs. getting his backside chewed out after 10 (hopefully 11) more games this year and was done. It happens. I am sure this has been a week from hell for the offense this week after last week's nearly non-existent showing against a FCS team and he doesn't want to deal with it. Could have been a "if you don't want to be here then leave" speech and he left.

Next Man in, thankfully it is a highly recruited player, and best of luck to Jacob.

Isn't it the case that ISU will continue to pay for his schooling, but that it will no longer count as one of the 85 scholarships? (Or I could be way off).

I read he was first team academic Big 12 and had the high GPA on our team. By now he realizes he's not going to play professionally after this year. I see no fault in him deciding that spending his last bit of college focused on his studies, attaining an internship, etc. is the best use of his time. As Zack Spears said, it's kind of refreshing to see a kid not have football as his only source of identity. You see far too many stories like Max Hall's, where you don't have anything beyond football, and once that's gone all that's left for you is shoplifting from Best Buy and shooting up cocaine.

Yeah, but at least he could have played against Iowa.:unsure: We are getting tired of the Hok trolls.

It's a shame that the young man quit the team, but I don't see the event being anything more or less than it has been described. A personal choice by a young man who has been on the team for 5 years. 5 years is a long time to commit to something that absolutely dominates every aspect of your life. I get that people are disappointed that the young man didn't fulfill his commitment to play until the very last snap, but his priorities changed and he lost his desire to play.

I do believe that he should be held financially responsible for the last semester of his education as it was his choice to quit, but I hold no animosity towards him for that choice. Bad timing to be sure, but I am certain that he had expressed some of these doubts and concerns before now and had probably been persuaded to try and stick it out. Probably also hoping that the thrill of the competition might help reignite his passion for the game. It didn't seem to, and he is now gone.

I'm sure no one on this board criticizing his decision has ever quit anything they started and has fulfilled each and every obligation they have ever taken on to its very end successfully. Casting the first stone and all of that. There has seemingly been a series of unfortunate events around the football program the last few years and it sucks to lose a seasoned player in a position that we would like to retain some depth in, but there is a ton in life more important than playing a game on Saturdays and if this decision by Jacob helps him accomplish some of those goals outside of football more quickly and fully then more power to him. And best of luck to you young man thank you for your efforts on and off the field these past 5 years.
